ウェールズから、はじめまして

よき友人の山田剛久（注：ホビダス編集長）から、ブログをやってくれないか？ 週に２回更新してくれればいいんだが、と持ちかけられた時、私はパニックに陥った。とは言え、よく聞けば、私が興味を持っていることや私が暮らす周辺のことなら、何を書いてもいい、とのことなので、取りあえずは引き受けたのだ。
しかし親愛なる皆さん、アナグマがどうやって私の鳥小屋に侵入すべく穴を掘るのか？ とか、プログレ・ロックバンド「ピンク・フロイド」の音楽性全般にリック・ライトがどんな影響を与えたか？ とか、或いは「ビートルズ」に関する最新刊の内容が全て正直というわけでない理由とか、そんなことを本当に知りたいですか？
甚だしきに至って、なぜ私が1938〜'39年のアメリカ車セダンのぱっとしないディンキー製ミニカーをインターネットで探しているのか？ とか、なぜ私がホンダの新型セダンの発表会を見に行くべく、このささやかな日記を慌てて仕上げようとしているのかとか…。
まぁ、よしとせねば。取るに足らない内容かもしれないが、気に入って頂けたなら、コメントなどお寄せ頂ければ幸いです。
それでは、野蛮で湿って陰鬱で風が吹きすさぶ（ちょうど今がその時期だ）、英国は西ウェールズの丘から、ブライアンの「小さなブログ」をお届けしよう。これからは、「ディンキー」や「クレッセント」などの古いオモチャや書籍、蓄音機レコードやゼンマイ仕掛けの蓄音機、古いビール瓶など、さまざまなものの蒐集生活の様子をお知らせしていくことになる。しかし、今はあまり書いている時間がない。なぜなら、約1時間後にハヴフォードウエスト空港にて、某ホンダ氏から新しい3ドア・シビックを見せて貰う約束をしているのだ。遅刻するわけにはいかない。
今晩、帰宅する頃までに、何通かのメールが着いている事を強く願っている。多分、その内の1通は、私がかねてより探している「ディンキー39シリーズ」の「プロフィール」アメリカン・サルーンの2台の内の1台を誰が持っているかを報せるものだ。ちなみに私が必要としている2台とは、リンカーン・ゼファーとスチュードベーカー・コマンダーである。これが揃えば5台からなるシリーズをコンプリートできるのだ。私は既にオールズモビル、ビュイック、パッカードの3台は持っており、カラフルな「輸出用」カラーに塗ってレストア済みだ。また他に1〜2通、私がやっているラジオ番組中にて、いろんなジャズCDから曲を選んで放送する許可を与える旨、通達するEメールもあるはずだ。それでは、続きは次回。

Blogging away at a keyboard - 1

When my good friend Takehisa Yamada said that he wanted me to write for your web site two times every week I was immediately in a panic. Then he told me that I could write about anything - all my many interests and involvements and I stopped panicking. But do you dear reader really want to know about how a badger has been trying to gnaw his way into my hen house - or perhaps what influence Rick Wright had on the overall sound of progressive rockers Pink Floyd or why I think that the latest book on the Beatles is not totally honest. Or even why I’m searching the internet for two obscure Dinky Toy models of 1938-9 American sedans and why I’m rushing to finish this mini-diary to go and see the public launch of a new Honda saloon?
Well - no doubt you’ll write in and tell us both if you do approve - we hope that you do.
So, from the wild, wet, gloomy and windy (it’s that time of the year) hills of West Wales in the United Kingdom, welcome to the world of Brian’s “Mini Blogs” and my life of collecting old toys like Dinky and Crescent, books. Gramophone records and old clockwork gramophones, old beer bottles and lots more. I’m not going to say much more right now because I am told that a certain Mr. Honda will be waiting to show me his new car (the new three-door Civic) at Haverfordwest Airport in an hour or so and I don’t want to be late.
But I do hope that by the time I get back this evening there will be some emails waiting for me - perhaps one telling me that someone has one of the two Dinky 39 series “Profile” American saloons that I’m looking for to complete the set of five. The two I need are the Lincoln Zephyr and Studebaker Commander. I already have the Oldsmobile, Buick and Packard and we’ve restored them in the more colourful ‘export’ colours. Also maybe I’ll get one or two emails giving me permission to broadcast tracks from various jazz CDs that I want ti include in my radio programmes. But I’ll tell you more about that another time.

Brian, how about your impression of the new Honda? Are you going to take it ?

Yes one day we will have the new Civic - it is a sensational piece of design
and would be great fun to race. BH
