いい加減にしなさい！と妻が…

私はebayのインターネット・オークションで、こそこそとディンキーのミニカーに入札しようとしていた。するとタイミング悪く妻がスタジオに入ってきて、肩越しに画面を見るや、「こら！ディンキーはもうダメよ。すっかり止めたもんだと思ってたのに！」と怒られてしまった。
コンプリートする為に、あと数台だけディンキー製ミニカーが必要なんだよ、といくら説明したところで、彼女にとっては意味のないことだ。女性は概ねコレクションというものを理解してくれない。
「テディ・ベア」を集めている女性に会ったことはあるし、「ボタン」や「宝石」、或いは「お金」を集めるのにご執心の女性もいるのだから、コレクションという行為を理解する女性が皆無ということではないと思う。しかし、とにかく…。私のコレクションは（いろんな意味でとても優れた）妻に不評であり続けてきた。
彼女は概ね容認してくれている。しかし私たちは今、納屋を改築しようとしているのだ。私たちは、数年前まで農地だった土地に住んでおり、かつて干草の貯蔵や牛の飼育に使われていた納屋も幾つか所有している。妻は私が古いオモチャにお金を使うのをやめさせたいのだ。そうすれば納屋を改築する作業を開始する時に、大工さんに払う現金に充てることができる。ちなみに一軒の納屋を、家族や友人たちが休暇に使えるような洒落たコテージに改造するためには、街中でちょっとした家を買うのと同じくらいに金がかかるのだ。古いディンキーに換算すれば膨大な量に値する。
私はこの極めてちっぽけな問題に関して再考する必要がありそうだ。しかも妻は、私が自分の新しいラジオ番組「www.radiojazz.co.uk」で使うために手に入れた、もうすぐスタジオに届くはずの新しいCDの山がどれほど量なのかをまだ知らない。いやはや、とんでもないことになりそうだ。
一方、ebayオークションで私が追いかけていたディンキーのスチュードベーカーは22.50ポンドまで値が上がってしまった。これなるとちょっと無理だ。リンカーン・ゼファーの方は、オークション終了まで3日を残して現在5ポンドほど。これは逃したくないと強く思っているが、それが離婚の原因にならないことを祈るしかない！

There was I sitting quietly at my computer bidding in Ebay Dinky Toy on-line auctions when my wife comes into my studio - looked over my shoulder to see what I was doing and announced in an angry voice “Oh no, not more Dinky Toys. I thought you were going to stop”.
It would be pointless explaining that there are still quite a few Dinkies that I need to complete several projects. She wouldn’t understand because sadly women don’t understand collecting. Well - perhaps a few do. I have come across lady teddy bear collectors, others who collect buttons and jewellery, some who even collect money. But my collecting has always been unpopular with my other - and in many ways much better - half. She accepts most of it but now that we are about to have one of our barns - we have several former hay and cow barns as we live on what was until a few years ago a working farm - she wants me to stop spending money on old toys so that we will have the cash to pay the builders when they start. And - as the cost of making one barn into a holiday cottage for family and friends is going to be about as much as buying a small house in a town - that’s a lot of old Dinky Toys.
So maybe I’m going to have to re-think this particular little problem. And she hasn’t yet seen the size of the parcels of new CDs that are on their way for my new radio shows at www.radiojazz.co.uk Oh dear - I think I may be in big trouble.
Meanwhile one of the Studebakers I was after has gone up to £22.50 which is too much for me and the Lincoln Zephyr is hovering around the £5 mark but with three days to go. I have big hopes for that one and am just hoping that if I do buy it the model doesn’t become grounds for divorce!!!
