ジョン、ポール、ジョージ、リンゴ、そして私。そして彼も。

それは1964年の暑い真夏のこと。政治の世界は混乱していた。南アフリカではネルソン・マンデラという名の人物が反逆罪のために終身刑を宣告されていた。英国は「ブルー・ストリーク」という小型宇宙ロケットを打ち上げた。インドでは新しい首相が誕生し、アメリカでは新しい市民権法が可決された。そしてロンドンでは…。ブライアン・エプスタインという名の男が私に電話をよこし、昼食に招待してくれた。
その頃の私は、首尾よく英国のポップス週刊紙の1つ、「レコード・ミラー」新聞の編集長という地位に就いており、同紙を右肩下がりの状態から再生させようともがいていた。エプスタインは、影のあるどこか妖しく謎めいた男で、ポップス界の衝撃的な新星、「ザ・ビートルズ」のマネージャーであった。彼はショーファーが運転する彼のロールス・ロイスで私を事務所から連れ出し、我々は豪勢なランチを共にした。ビートルズは「マージー・ビート」というリバプールのポップス新聞を買ったが、これは無駄遣いだったと彼は主張した。リバプールに行き、マージー・ビート紙を復活させるために何かできることがあるか、続けるべきなのか、状況を見極めてくれないか？と、彼は私を誘った。

私のこの返事は、エプスタインにとっては「脈なし」パターンに感じられたことだろう。数日後、彼は再び、巨額の給料と、リバプールでの賃貸料タダの家、ビートルズへの実質的に自由な接近と、無制限のコストなどを提示しつつ、私にアプローチしてきた。 言い換えれば、彼は例えいくら金がかかろうが、私に「マージー・ビート」紙を救って欲しかったのである。彼の言葉はビートルズが欲していることでもあった。
この時期、ビートルズのプレス担当者、すなわち彼らに関する報道、広報関係に関わる一切を取り仕切る人物は、強面だが、とても才気に溢れたリバプールのジャーナリスト、トニー・バローだった。 あの日々が遠い昔になった最近になって、トニーは彼の側から見たストーリー、すなわち彼が如何にビートルズのフロントマンになったか、という話を書いた。また彼の話の中では人気の絶頂期における「素晴らしい4人」に関して、従来「秘密」とされてきた多くの内部事情も語られている。彼の本は「ジョン、ポール、ジョージ、リンゴと私 。本当のビートルズ物語 」と題され、アンドレ・ドイチュから出版されている。
私は当時トニーに会ったことを思い出せないのだが、会ったことがあるはずだ。そして、ビートルズ「帝国」の小さな一部としての私の一時期を通じてずっと、我々が同時に働いていたことは間違いない。この本を読むことは、ほとんど文字通り、足が地面に触れないほど走り回っていたあの時代に私を連れ戻してくれる。イベント、新しいバンド、新しい歌手は瞬く間に現れては消えていった。少なくとも 私にとっては、タイム・マシーンか幻のようである。トニーが幸運だったのは記録を残していたことだ。いや、残していたはずだ。と言うのも、この名著の中で、彼は月ごと、ヒット・レコード1枚ごと、映画１本ごと、コンサート・ツアー1本ごとに、ビートルズの物語を語っているのだから。彼はしばしば、誰が何を誰に言ったかを覚えているし、とりわけ常に場所を記憶している。
この本では、誰が誰と結婚したとか、誰のガールフレンドが誰のものだったかとか、多くの秘密が露わになっている。そしてトニーは、私がこれまで他で露出したのを見たことのない話にも言及している。それは1966年の日本ツアーで起こった、4人を殺害するというシリアスな脅迫に関する話だ。彼らは有名な日本武道館でコンサートを行う予定だったが、もし武道館のアリーナで演奏を強行すれば、4人を殺害するという脅迫が血気盛んな学生の一群から届いていたのだ。トニーが言うには、「彼らは、そのように特別な文化的価値を持つ神聖な場所が、ロックンロール・ショーの会場として使用されることがあってはならないと感じていた」のだ。東京国際空港に到着したときには、3万人以上の警備が4人を守る為に動員され、彼らの滞在を通して、安全を確実なものをする為、更に何千という人間が動員された。彼らはホテル（東京ヒルトン）の中でまるで囚人のようだった。結局、ありがたいことに学生達の脅迫は失敗に終わり、コンサートと残りのツアーも万事成功で幕を閉じたのであった。
ビートルズの為に働いた私の時間は素晴らしかった。コンサートのステージで彼らの脇に立った時、ショーの更衣室にいた時、映画のセット上にいた時、ロンドンでリンゴの家を訪ねた時などなど、多くの刺激的な忘れられない経験が圧縮されているのである。 私はしばしば、その日々について書くよう頼まれてきた。しかし私が書かずとも、トニー・バローの本には、あらゆるページにそういった話が散りばめられている。それは、これまでのものの中で、最も親密で巧みに綴られたビートルズのインサイド・ストーリーである。決定版と言えるストーリーなので、可能なら一読をお薦めする。それは私が嫉妬するほどの出来栄えだ…。

It was the hot midsummer of 1964 - the political world was in turmoil. In South Africa a man called Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment for treason, Britain launched a sub-space rocket called “Blue Streak”, India had a new Prime Minister, America passed a new civil rights law and in London a man called Brian Epstein telephoned me and invited me to have lunch with him.
At the time I was happily occupying the exalted position of Managing Editor of one of our national pop music weekly newspapers “Record Mirror” and trying to revitalise its flagging fortunes. Epstein was the shadowy, somewhat mysterious and enigmatic manager of the new pop sensation The Beatles. He collected me from our offices in his chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce and we lunched somewhere swanky. He had a proposition for me. The Beatles, he claimed, had bought a Liverpool pop music newspaper called “Mersey Beat” which was losing money. Would I go to Liverpool, have a look at it and see if anything could be done to revive it - save it?
I was reluctant - but didn’t want to alienate the man whose word could give my newspaper access to the hottest ever pop music group - and we needed that in order to be able to write about them in intimate terms. So - I said I’d go and have a look and report back. This I duly did and
told Brian that the case looked hopeless. Days passed and Brian approached me again with an offer of a large salary, a rent-free house in Liverpool, virtually unfettered access to the Beatles and no restriction on my expenses. In other words he wanted me to save Mersey Beat whatever it cost. This is what he said The Beatles wanted.
During this time the Beatles press officer - the man who handled their press and public relations affairs was the tough but fair brilliant Liverpudlian journalist Tony Barrow. Now - all these years later - Tony has written his side of the story - how he came to be the Beatles front man and within his story he’s given the inside facts of many of the hitherto secret events surrounding the “Fab Four” during the peak periods of their popularity. His book is titled “John, Paul, George, Ringo and Me - The Real Beatles Story” and it’s published by Andre Deutsch.
I don’t remember meeting Tony then, but must have done and throughout my period as a small part of the Beatles “empire” we must have worked virtually in parallel. Reading the book takes me back to those days when almost literally our feet didn’t touch the ground. Events, new bands, new singers happened so rapidly that in hindsight it all - to me at least - takes on a fantasy-like time machine like blur. Fortunately Tony kept records - he must have because in this fine book he narrates the Beatles story month by month, hit record by hit record, film by film, concert tour by concert tour. He often remembers who said what and to whom and he always remembers where.
There are many secrets revealed in this book - who married who - whose girl friend was whose. And Tony relates the story - which I don’t remember ever seeing anywhere else - of the serious death threats that were made to the four during their Japanese tour of 1966. They were
scheduled to play concerts at the famous Nippon Budokan and group of zealous students had threatened to kill the four if they went ahead with their plans to play in that arena. As Tony says “they felt that a venue of such special cultural and spiritual importance must not be used to
stage rock ‘n’ roll shows”. It took over 30,000 security people to protect them on their arrival at Tokyo airport and many thousands more to ensure their safety throughout their stay. They were virtual prisoners in their hotel - the Tokyo Hilton but thankfully the student’s threats came to nothing and the concerts and the rest of the tour were completed successfully.
My time working for the Beatles was fine - exciting and packed with many unforgettable experiences like standing alongside them on stage at concerts, being in their dressing room at shows, being on one of their film sets, visiting Ringo in his London home. I have often been asked to write about those days but Tony Barrow’s book has experiences of that type on every page - it’s the most intimate and best related inside story of the Beatles yet. Read it if you can because this is the definitive story and I’m jealous…..
