「さよなら ジョン・デイ」 モデルカー世界の巨人の死を悼む。

ジョン・デイ - 1970年代初期に、ホワイトメタル製の1/43スケール自動車モデルカー・キットというホビーのジャンルを確立した人物 -が先頃亡くなった。享年78歳であった。
晩年のジョンは、ダイキャスト・モデルカーの製造という無謀な冒険が彼を破産に近い状況に追いやった以降の20年、表立った活動を見せず、かつては大きな人気を博した1/43モデルカー・キットに代えて、「ジョン・デイ ビークル・シーニックス」もしくは「マルヴァーン・モデルズ」と銘打って、1/72スケールの鉄道アクセサリー用モデルを製造していた。
1970年代初期、ジョンが「モデル・カーズ」誌に初めて自らのモデルカー・キットの広告を掲載した時、そんな種類のモデルカーは他に殆ど存在しなかった。レーシングカーの精密な模型を欲しがっていたモデルカー・コレクター達は、ゼロからスクラッチするか、ディンキー・トイズ、ソリド、マーキュリー、ポリトーイズといった既存のダイキャスト・モデルを改造するしかなかったのだ。それゆえ、ジョンが発表したモデルはコレクターの間で瞬く間に大人気となり、1～2軒の有名なモデルカーショップは、ジョンのキットの在庫を確保して、積極的なプロモーションに打って出るようになった。そんなモデルカーショップの中でも主要な役割を果たしたのは、私自身が経営していた「グランプリ・モデルズ」だった。
ジョンはまた、ブランドネームを付けたキットを欲しがる親しいメーカー達の為に「別注（特注）」キットの製造も手懸けた。私が経営していた「グランプリモデルズ」の為には、「クラシック・カーズ」と「レーシング」、ドイツの「ダンハウゼン・ショップ」の為には、後にかの「ミニチャンプス」に成長した「SD」、「マイク＆スー・リチャードソン」の為には、「マイカンスー」、他にも「エクイップ・ガロア」のようなエンスージァストの為にも数多くのキット製造を請け負っていたのだ。彼のチームが1/43スケール・キットに携わっていた時期、おそらく彼らは500種類以上のモデルカーを製造していただろうと思う。ジョンは当時、世界で最も優れた模型クリエーター達を雇っていたし、彼のキットのいくつかは価値ある古典として今でも熱狂的ファンによって評価されている。
しかしジョンは、模型の世界で長続きする友人を作らなかった。いくぶん風変わりだったビジネスの方法と、時々見せる身勝手すぎるもうやり方ゆえに、彼の取引先の中には、彼との商売を続けたがらない者も少なくはなかった。さらに - 彼がダイキャスト・モデルカーのビジネスに進出し、ある顧客からの注文に応じて膨大な量の商品を供給したにも関わらず、不払いが生じて厳しい財政的窮地に陥った時 - 元同僚達は、彼を見捨てた。これらの経験によって疲弊した彼は、田舎の農場で青果物を売る傍ら、ささやかに鉄道模型用アクセサリーの製造を生業とするようになった。
近年、私は何度か彼と会い話をしたが、かつて自身がメジャーなメーカーを運営した「あの頃」に戻りたいとは思わない、とジョンは言った。
現代のモデルカー・コレクションという趣味を創造したのは他ならぬ彼なのだと、私達は愛情をもってジョンを思い出すだろう。彼は、モデルカーの題材選びと、正確さに対する素晴らしい「目」を持っていた。彼はまた、キットは容易に組み立てられるものではならないことを理解していた。彼のモデル・エンジニアリングに関するアイディアは革命的だった。
彼の死は悲しい。寂しいことだ。しかし、かつて彼と巡り合い、共に働けたことは本当に素晴らしいことだった。
ありがとうジョン - 君なしでは、おそらく何も起こらなかった。今のモデルカーの世界は、おそらく存在しなかった。

Farewell to John Day - the man who started it all
Brian Harvey mourns the passing of a model world giant
John Day - the man who in the early 1970s virtually created the 1:43rd scale white metal car kit - has died. Aged 78 John had adopted a low profile in the last twenty years since an ill-advised venture into die cast manufacturing had driven him to near bankruptcy. Instead of continuing his at one time highly popular range of 1:43rd scale kits, John had instead created ranges of 1:72nd scale model railway accessory models under the range names “John Day Vehicle Scenics” and “Malvern Models”.
When in the early 1970s John first advertised his new range of kits in “Model Cars” magazine the type of model he was introducing hardly existed. Collectors who then wanted accurate model racing cars had to make them from scratch or modify existing die casts by companies like Dinky Toys, Solido, Mercury and Politoys. His models rapidly became popular among collectors and one or two retail outlets - my own Grand Prix Models being the main one - began to stock and promote the range.
John also began to manufacture “own range” kits for friends who wanted their own “name” brands. In this way he created ranges for Grand Prix Models “Classic Cars” and “Racing”, Germany’s Danhausen shop had their own “SD” which gradually grew to become “Minichamps”, Mike and Sue Richardson had “Mikansue” and many more were made for other enthusiasts like Equipe Gallois. I would guess that while his team were creating 1:43rd scale kits they probably made in excess of 500 different models. He employed what were then the world’s finest model creators and some of his kits are still viewed by aficionados as being classics.
John however did not make many lasting model world friends. With business methods that were somewhat eccentric and a sometimes over assertive manner, not everyone who had dealings with him wanted to continue. Then - when he fell on hard financial times through the non-payment of bills by people he had supplied vast quantities of die cast models to - former associates deserted him. Soured by the experience John took a part-time job working in a farm shop that sold locally grown produce and quietly marketed a small range of railway accessory models. I met him and talked to him several times in recent years and he said that he had no desire to return to the “big time” where he had been the major manufacturer in the hobby.
We will remember John with affection because it was he who virtually single handed created the modern collecting hobby. He had a fantastic eye for the right subject and for accuracy. He also understood that kits had to be easy to build - his model engineering ideas were revolutionary.
We will miss him but value the fact that we knew and worked with him. Thank-you John - without you it would probably not have happened.
