Dry Lake Speed Trial

El Mirage（エルミラージュ）Dry Lake（乾湖）へ行って来ました。
湖の水が干上がってできた広大でフラットな場所 Dry Lake。路面は土です、カチカチの土です。
この上で最高速が何マイル出るかを競う Speed Trial が開催されています。 Speed Trail はユタ州 Salt Flat で開催される Bonneville が有名です。Bonneville は干上がった塩湖の上を走るので、車は雪の中を走ったみたいに車の下から上から塩だらけになりますが、こちらは土埃だらけになります。
New Beetleの写真を見て下さい。とんでもない状態です。また細かい土埃はちょっとした隙間にも侵入してきます。
でも土埃は洗えば何とかなりますが、塩はそうは行きません。車に残った塩はそのまま車を侵食し、ある日錆が発生しそして穴があいてしまう、まさに塩害です。レンタカー会社によっては Salt Flat へ進入を禁止しているところもあるそうです。　 自分の車は大切なので Salt Lake にはレンタカーでないと行かないと言う人も居るくらいです。
Dry Lake での Speed Trial は戦前から開催され、まさに Hot Rod のルーツと言えるレースで、多くの日系レーサーも当時活躍していたそうです。
大変嬉しい事に Speed Trial レースでは、今でも MOON Disc 装着車を沢山見る事ができます。50年以上経っても需要がある製品はそんなにありませんね。日本ではカスタムパーツの MOON Disc もここでは新しい車でも古い車でも、最高速を１マイルでも早く走る為に必要なレース部品なのです。MOON Discを履いた車がまたカッコイイのです。
Dean MOON も自らレースカー MOON Beam のハンドルを握り、他界するまで参加していたのがこの Speed Trial です。
Dry Lake、それは Hot Rodder 達にとって特別な響きを持つ場所です。 地球上にこんな場所があるなんて信じがたいですね。

Vast Flat land "Dry Lake" made by dehydrated lake, Surface is land, hard sand and Flat. Speed trial race a race to mark fastest speed is carried on top of this land.
Famous speed trial is the Bonneville at salt flat in Utah. At Bonneville, cars race on top of salt flat dried out of salt lakes and cars are covered from bottom to top by Salt like snow, but in here cars are covered by sand.

These fine sand invade through little gaps. Sand can be washed out but salts, they won't. These sand can be solved by washing car, but not salts. Remained salt will one day eat off cars and one day will have rusted out hole, truly salt crisis. Some rent-a-car company denies service for driving to salt lakes. Some people only go to salt flat by rent-a-car just to save own car from salt. Dry Lake Speed Trial started before War II and is a root of Hot Rod with many Japanese American racers were playing active part of race.

Its very pleasing to see MOON DISC used on many race cars at Speed Trial races and how rare that product can be necessary and demanded for over fifty years. MOON DISC is used as custom parts in Japan but here in races MOON DISC is necessary parts on new or old car to make that extra 1 mile faster. And the cars are really cool with MOON DISC on. Speed Trial is the race which Dean MOON himself raced on race car MOON Beam until he has passed away. Dry Lake is place with very especial meaning for Hot Rodder. It is hard to believe there is place like this on earth. Happiest place on the earth.
