Bon Festival（盆踊り大会）

夏といえば盆踊りですね。
MOONEYES Area-1がある本牧も昨年まで毎年、Area-1裏の空き地で「本牧祭り」が開催されていましたが、今年はその空き地が売却された為、開催できなくなったそうです。しかもその空き地は11月から工事が始まり、2008年には大きなスーパーが出来ます。 横浜の中心地に残った空間も、だんだんどこにでもある風景に変わって行くようです。

その昔は米軍住宅地内にあった野球場を使い、日米親睦を兼ねた盆踊りが開催されていました。今でもCamp Zamaとかでは開催されているのでしょうか。基地で開催される盆踊り大会は名前からしてちょっと違った"Bon Festival"。楽しかった記憶がよみがえります。



本牧にはYCAC（Yokohama Country and Athletic Club）と呼ばれる、日本に住む外国人の為の大きな保養施設が山の上にあります。Tokyo American Clubのような感じでメンバーOnly、我々一般日本人あるいはメンバー以外の人はOff Limits(まるで米軍施設のようですが）。つまり普段はまったく関係ないのですが、先週末そのYCACでBon Festivalが開催され、その時だけはGateをオープンし近隣周辺の住民も一緒に楽しめるので、ちょっと覗きに行きました。



広くしかも手入れの行き届いた芝生があり、昭和を感じる古い建物。ここは昔、基地のあった本牧と変わらない空気が2007年の今も流れているようでした。



フラダンスあり、



盆踊りあり、BBQチキンやビールやShaved Ice等、ちょっとお洒落なBon Festival。本牧はまだまだ楽しい所がたくさんあります。

いよいよ今週末からObon Weekが始まります。MOONEYES Area-1 & MOON Cafeは通常通り営業しています！

The "BON ODORI"(BON DANCE) is the summer things you can't miss in Japan. People get together and dance together. Until last year, "HONMOKU MATSURI(Festival)" was hosted every year in OBON season at open land behind MOONEYES Area-1 in Honmoku but this year as that open land was sold, the "HONOMKU MATSURI" was no longer hosted. Plus that open land will be mega supermarket in 2008 and construction will start in November. The view of central Yokohama is changing to any suburb sights.

Back in the days, US Force residential area in Honomku, Yokohama used to open the gate for Obon Festivals held in their baseball field for Japan USA culture support. But it was until 1983 when the US Force residential area returned to the city of Yokohama. Maybe Camp "ZAMA" still has that. Bon Odori held in US Base is called Bon Festival, which was different and unique from name to its own thing.

In Honmoku there is huge sports club for people from abroad in top of hill(mountain) called YCAC(Yokohama Country and Athletic Club). Its like Tokyo American Club in Roppongi, Tokyo, members only, ordinary Japanese are off limits(like US Base) so it has nothing to do with us in everyday life but last weekend they had Bon Festival at YCAC and opened gate for public to enjoy and I went too to take a look.

Huge and nice tidy green rye grass are there with old style building, Make this place like old US base still live in 2007. Hula Dance, Bon Dance, BBQ chicken, beer and Shaved Ice little nicer Bon Festival, Honmoku has many nice fun places.

Obon week starts from this week. MOONEYES Area-1 and MOON Cafe will be open as usual! Please come and visit!
