この Pick Up を見てピーンと来た方はかなりの MQQN Fan ですね。
この車の最初のオーナーはあの Fred Larsen だったのです。
Fred は 1992年に同じ車を買ったのですが自宅の Driveway で盗難にあったしまい
この車を 1995年購入し 2003年に亡くなる迄この車で Bonneville へそして MQQNEYES へ来ていました。
その後、 Bill が譲り受け Bill もまた亡くなる迄この車で MQQNEYES へ通っていたのです。
そして Open House の日、 Jenks' Family から MQQNEYES へ寄付されました。
今年の Bonneville へ Chico's 533 Modified Roadster を引っ張って行く事でしょう。
Jenks' Family ありがとうございます！

If you recognized this pickup, then you must be a MQQN Fan.
This car was originally purchased and owned by Fred Larsen. Fred initially purchased the same model truck in 1992 but that one was stolen from his driveway so he ended up getting this one in 1995. He used this truck Bonneville and commuting to MQQNEYES until his passing in 2003. After that, Bill inherited the truck and used it to commute to MQQNEYES until his death.
On the day of the Open House, the Jenks' Family donated the car to MQQNEYES.
This year (next month) it will be used to pull Chico's 533 Modified Roadster to Bonneville.
A very special thank you to the Jenks' family. We deeply appreciate the gift and will cherish it always.

鈴鹿SCNに居ます。(Suzuka SCN)

	WWII敗戦直後のNew Grand Hotel Right after the end of WWII in 1945. New Grand Hotel Yokohama

天気も持ちそうだしならし運転兼ねて 1960 Thunderbird で行ってきます。
何でも鈴鹿が 1962年に出来て今年で 50周年と言う事で 「1962年型のクルマ集まって」 と
主催者の Hot Stuff 山口さんから声が掛かったので 1962年 Toyopet Crown Custom も持って行きます。
Crown は積載車に積んで行くので道中 T-bird に何かおきたら Crown に乗り換えれば良いので安心ですね。
それでは 6/3(日) は鈴鹿で会いましょう。
富士開催される Ikura's American Festival にも勿論 MQQNEYES は出店しています。
今週は忙しいです。

Looks like the weather will hold up this weekend so I'll be driving the 1960 Thunderbird.
From Yokohama, Suzuka is about a 5 hour drive with a distance of 368 km (229 mi).
Suzuka Circuit was built in 1962 and this year it's their 50th Anniversary. I received a call from the event promoter Mr. Yamaguchi of Hot Stuff asking me to bring my 1962 Toyopet Crown Custom as they want to bring together cars built in 1962.
The Crown will be brought to the event on a hauler so if something happens to the T-bird along the way, we'll switch the cars and I'll drive the Crown.
So I hope to meet you all on Sunday June 3rd at Suzuka Street Car Nationals in Suzuka Circuit.
If you are planning to go to Fuji Speedway instead for Ikura's American Festival, MQQNEYES will have a booth there too. Stop by and say hello.
This weekend is going to be busy.

MQQNEYES Area-1 1Fで MQQNEYES Dragster 写真パネル展を５月7日(月）迄開催中です。

Drag Bikes

NHRA Museum には Race Car ばかりでなく Drag Bike も展示されています。
これは一見の価値ありです。そして古い Drag Bike を集めた本がこちらです。
この本も一見の価値ありです。

The NHRA Museum isn't just Race Cars but they also have a number of Drag Bikes on display too.
It's worth visiting the museum just to see these vintage bikes. There's a new book out with a historical look and Drag Bikes too. The book is also worth getting.

2012年5月17日 MQQN Cafeは20周年を迎えます。
1991年5月17日、最初のMQQN Cafeは２軒隣で50s Styleでオープンしました。
Seeburg のジュークボックスはテーブル上のセレクターから好きなミュージックを選曲でき
クローズドキッチンスタイルでしたし席数も今より多かったと思います。
カウンター席は禁煙席としましたが　喫煙出来る席だけが一杯でお待ちになるお客様からは
「なぜカウンターが空いているのに座れないの？！」との声が多くすぐメゲ、
全面喫煙可となりつい数年前まではその状態でしたが神奈川県指導により今はめでたく全面禁煙での営業となっております。
1996年7月13日 現在の場所で60s Style Coffee Shopとして新たに営業を開始しました。
月日が経つのは早いもので20年を迎えようとしています。
飲食業の20年は小売業の20年とはまた違うハッスルが沢山ありました。
そして今の店長はGin前田君、初代店長はE藤君、初代アルバイトはGoshu君でした。
MQQN Cafe 20th Anniversaryを企画していますのでどうぞお楽しみに！！

May 17, 2012 MQQN Cafe celebrates its 20th Anniversary.
May 17, 1991, the first MQQN Cafe was two buildings down and opened as a 50s style diner.
It had a Seeburg jukebox that customers could select to play music from right at their table and the cooking are was a closed kitchen style environment. I think there used to be more seating though.
Initially, the counter was non-smoking only but at the time only the smoking section would be full and a lot of customers would ask, "Why is the counter seating open?!" So, we decided to make all seating available to smokers.
That was how it was until recently when the new law passed in Yokohama prohibiting smoking and we happily changed all indoor seating to a non-smoking environment.
July 13, 1996 in its current location, we reopened the cafe as a 60s style Coffee Shop.
Time has passed so fast and now it's been 20 years.
20 years of food and beverage service takes a different hustle compared to 20 years of retail service.
The current cafe manager is Gin Maeda, the first manager was E. To along with first generation part-timer Goshu.
We are currently working on something special for the MQQN Cafe 20th Anniversary so stay tuned!!

Family Pet Toyopet Crown Pick Up

30年前の 1981年6月 Doug と二人で Oahu島へ知り合いを頼りに行った時買った雑誌 「Hawaiian Hot Rod」, 今ハワイで車雑誌は存在しているのでしょうか？
残念ながら Magazine Stand では見つけられませんでした。
色々興味深い記事の中に何と "Family Pet" と言うタイトルで Toyopet (昔の TOYOTA の呼び名) 観音 Pick Up を発見！
それも Chevy SB V-8 が載っていてカラーリングがいかしている 70s 風の車。
以前 Santa Monica で見た同系車をいれて USA ではこれで２台目の観音 Crown Pick Up。
「ハワイにもあったんだ」 「これも是非見てみたい」 と思ってもなかなか叶う物では無く島を離れました。

ちなみに Santa Monica にあったのは 2年前の Hot Rod Custom Show で衝撃のデビューをした車です。
話を元に戻し、30年経ったある日、 Oahu の友人にこのページを送ったら何と何とですよオーナーを見つけ出してくれたのです。
しかもまだこの車を所有していると言う話、それから色々あって今回やっとお宅をお邪魔し、実車を拝見させて頂いたのでした。
ガレージには Transmission, Engine 等が所せましを置かれ足の踏み場も無い感じ、車はバラバラ状態でしたがペイントもインテリアも当時のまま、ホイルは Ansen Slot から Centerline に変わっていましたがこのホイルもしっかり似合っていました。
「ワイキキをクルーズすると人気が抜群だったとか」
クルーズをしていると沢山の人に見られて恥ずかしいと言う奥さんに
「君が見られているのでは無くてこの車が見られているんだ」とか
Lanai で昔の話を沢山聞かせて頂きました。
この機会を作ってくれた友人の Hawaii Five O に感謝、感謝です。
是非ともこのままの姿でもう一度走る姿を見たいものです。

30 years ago in June 1981, my friend Doug and I went to the island of Oahu to visit friends there. I bought this magazine called "HAWAIIAN HOT ROD", a quarterly magazine just started that year. I wonder if they are still around?
While I was there recently, I looked but didn't see any on newsstands for sale.

It was filled with great content and articles and one article was titled "Family Pet" and then I realized it was a Toyopet (old name for Toyota) 1st generation Pickup! It was stuffed with Chevy SB V-8 and was painted with a 70s theme.
I remember seeing the same model 1st generation Crown Pickup in Santa Monica back in the late 70s, so that makes 2 that still exist in the USA.

I remember thinking to myself, "They exist in Hawaii too" and, "Sure would like to see it in person," but I eventually left the island and returned to Japan.

By the way, the one from Santa Monica made a shocking debut at the Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show a few years ago.

Back to the topic at hand, and 30 years later to the present time. I had sent this article to my friend in Oahu and next thing you know, he told me he found the original owner!

Not only did he find the owner, the owner still has the car in his possession. After they talked several times, he agreed for us to come and look at the actual car in person.

In the garage there was barely anywhere to walk because the engine and transmission were out and there were stuff all around. The car was taken apart but the paint and interior were still exact as the magazine article. The wheels which used to be Ansen were swapped for Centerlines which still look great.

"This was a popular car to cruise around Waikiki." His wife said that while going for a cruise, so many people would stop and look. It was embarrassing. He replied with, "They weren't looking at us, they were looking at the car."

We all sat around "talking story" about old times on their Lanai.
If it wasn't for my friends Hawaii Five O action, we wouldn't have been able to do that and I am grateful. Thank you!

Novaの居る風景 / Nova in Various Scenes

California へ Nova を持って帰りました。 やっぱり So Cal が似合っていますね。
役目が終わった USA 車は戻してあげましょう、車が生き返りました。
I recently brought the Nova back to California from Japan. Actually, it's better for it to be in So Cal.
Once the duties of a car are finished, put them back where they came from, the car will revive itself.

MOON Trike - ムーントライク

遂に MOON Trike が引っ張り出されました。
ベースは 1971年 Suzuki T250 だと思います。
それに Dean が見つけて来た Rickshaw (人力車) の座席部分をくっ付けたトライクです。
リアホイルはマグネシューム製、 タイヤ Goodyear Blue Streak Tire、 何と申しましょうか？
70s です。
来週末の Born Free 3 に持って行く予定です。

Finally after all these years, we pulled the MOON Trike out of storage.
The base, I think, is a Suzuki T250.
Plus the Rickshaw the Dean picked up for somewhere and used that for the rear seat of the trike.
The rear wheels are magnesium and tires are Goodyear Blue Streak. What can you say? That's the 70s.
Next weekend we plan on bringing this to Born Free 3.

Anique? 古い、ビンテージの話

今回は MOONEYES USA にある古い物特集です。
今度来店される際はよーく見て行って下さい。
それとなく古い物があっちこっちにあります。
Dean が残した物は何一つ捨てていません。
今もそのまま使っている物も沢山あります。
全て現役です。
This post features a lot of the old antiques that have been collected over time here at MOONEYES USA. Next time you are here for a visit, be sure to look for them.
There are a lot of old things all over the place too.
Everything that Dean MOON left behind was kept and nothing was thrown away.
Even now, there are a lot of things that are still in use.
All of it is still active duty.


上は住所がまだ Santa Fe Springs になる前のステッカー
下の黄色丸に MOON Equipped も今はありません。
このキャビネットも古いです。
The sticker above was made before MOON Equipment Company had a Santa Fe Springs address.
The round yellow sticker below it with MOON Equipped is no longer made.
This cabinet is super old too.


1/2 Mile Drags ってどう言うのでしょうか？
I wonder what it was like to have 1/2 Mile Drags?


Roadster のホイルは MOON Discs ではありません。
The wheels on the Roadster don't have MOON Discs.


ここは７０年代のステッカー、 上のインテークは
Big Block Chevy 様 Weber Down Draft Intake です。
These are all 70s era stickers, the intake manifold on top is for a big block Chevy, Weber Down Draft setup.

Garage のドアは 50年代からの物、 以上に重たいです。
The garage door is from the 50s, it's incredibly heavy.


中央の MOON Discs は Mickey Thompson's Challenger に装着されていた物。
手前のつぶれた MOON Fuel Tank は Dragster でひっくり返った時の物です。
このキャビネットも勿論古いです。
The MOON Disc in the center was actually used on Mickey Thompson's Challenger. In front of that, the crushed MOON Fuel Tank is from the Dragster when it flipped over. The cabinet is obviously old.

これは新製品の Mini Brake Pedal、 車にもバイクに使えます。
This is a new item, Mini Brake Pedal, which can be used for cars and bikes.


Chico が Swap Meet で見つけてきた古いバイク。
Chico picked up this old bike from the swap meet.


これは Tim の陸王、 後ろは Wade の Sportster。
This is Tim's Rikuo (Japanese side-valve Harley), behind it is Wade's Sportster.


Intake と Injection のコレクション
This area is the intake & injection collection.


メモラビリアが沢山、 Dean MOON の Passport もあります。
Lots of memorabilia, Dean MOON's passport is kept here too.


US Gauge 製 MOON Gauges & others.
Showcase with instruments by a company called US Gauge. Old MOON Gauges were made by them.


最近 気に入っているレストラン "Blue Fin"、 関係ないか！？
Recently been interested in this restaurant called "Blue Fin" but that's another story.

今日から22日 (日) まで MOONEYES Area-1 で開催する
MOONEYES 25周年記念ですが MOON Garage には MOONEYES が
製作した車やバイク、 関係があった車 & バイクのパネルが何と約 180枚、
自分でもビックリ、 その殆どは僕の思いつきで製作してしまった物ばかり
何か 25年の歴史を感じつつ、 「何て事をしてたのだろう」 と思ってしまいま した。
うーん、 本当に凄い台数です。 きっと昔話が弾みますよ！
これらの車を集めたポスターも販売します。 こちらも強烈です。
その他、 色々な催しを 22日まで行いますので是非お立ち寄り下さい。
お待ちしております。

Beginning today until the 22nd (Sunday), there's a big celebration event at MOONEYES Area-1.
The 25th Anniversary of MOONEYES is taking place all week and we have a special exhibit in MOON Garage featuring photo prints of MOONEYES built cars and bikes. Related projects of cars and bikes over the years are on display and there are about 180 panels, even I was surprised. Looking at all the photos brings back memories from those times and puts 25 years in perspective like a historical record. Seeing all this makes me wonder, "How did I do all this?"
The gallery is amazing to see all together. I'm sure it will stir up a lot of old stories!
We put together a limited poster with a collage of these cars which will be on sale too. It's awesome too!
There will be other festivities happening until the 22nd so be sure to stop by MOONEYES Area-1 in Honmoku Yokohama.
We'll be waiting for you!

Garage Party

SCN 25回を 1回目からほぼ毎回手伝ってくれている方々にささやかなお礼が出来ました。
今迄ありがとうございました。
そしてこれからも宜しくお願いします！！
一つ問題は平均年齢55歳、疲れが翌日には出ない年齢です。
I wanted to express my gratitude to the people that have helped out just about every single year from the first SCN to last month's 25th SCN.
Thank you very much for your assistance through the years.
And I look forward to many more to come!!
One slight problem is the group's average age is 55, so we don't feel tired until two days after the event.




Deuce Factory の Kasaiさんはポスターを 8回目まで描いててくれた事が新たに分かりました。てっきり 3回目までだと思っていました。
I didn't actually realize until now that Mr. Kasai from Deuce Factory created the event posters up to the 8th Annual. For some reason, I thought it was just the first 3 years.

33年振りのT-bird / T-bird After 33 Years

33年振りに 1960年 T-bird が復活。
After a decade in storage, I decided to revive this 1960 T-bird.


復活させたは良いけどそれにしてもヒドイ外装、何とかしたいが　どうにかなるのでしょうか？
Saying it is one thing but the condition is just about unbearable, I don't know where to start and wonder how it's going to turn out?


画像からでは分かりにくいけど（分かるか？）内外装ともかなりきつい状況です。
I don't know if you can see it from the pictures (or can you) but the interior is just as bad as the interior.

VANS Shoes

21日火曜日 VANS Shoes の広告の撮影で鎌倉に来ていた VANS Staff 一同が MOONEYES Area-1 に仕事の合間を見て来店しました。
On Tuesday Sept. 21, the VANS Staff stopped by MOONEYES Area-1 for a visit after a photo shoot in Kamakura for VANS Shoes.

Dean MOON 時代に作られた VANS Shoes を嬉しそうに撮影、MOONEYES と Vans は Dean MOON 時代からのお付き合い、つい最近でも Vans/MOONEYES Shoes が発売されていました。
They were delighted to take photos of a pair of original VANS when Dean MOON first teamed up with Vans Shoes. Vans and MOON have been connected a long time and even released Vans Shoes a couple years ago.


そのうちバイクを乗り回しそれを撮影するカメラマン？
After that they took photos riding around MOONEYES on a bike.


ほぼ全員がカメラを持っているので誰が本当のカメラマンか分かりません。
と嵐のように去って行きました。
Oh the cameraman? Virtually all the staff had top notch cameras and they were all taking pictures so I didn't know who the main camera was. But as soon as they came, they were gone like a passing storm.

My Hero, Kenji Okazaki

NHRA National Dragster 誌 August 20, 2010 Issue の表紙に何と Kenji Okazaki が出ているではありませんか！
Kenji Okazaki's picture was on the cover of the August 20th, 2010 issue of NHRA National Dragster Magazine!


しかも中ページにも、「あの人は今？」ページかと思ったら National Event で1回しか勝った事のない Driver の特集でした。それも Reader's Choice のです。1回と言うと少ない感じもしますが Cole Foster の御父さんの Pat Foster, Jungle Jim Liberman も National Event の Win は 1回だけだったそうです。
I thought it was going to be an article on "where are they now" but it was a special article about drivers who won a Nationals event just one time only. Plus he was a reader's choice. It would sound like there would only be a few people that won a National event just once but there are many including Cole Foster's father Pat Foster and Jungle Jim Liberman.

Morning Cruise - OCIR

FWY #405 と #5 が交わる Irvine Center Dr. で毎週土曜日に開催されるMorning Cruise は凄い車が集まります。
There's a Morning Cruise every Saturday on Irvine Center Drive where the #405 and #5 FWY intersect with incredible cars.




そして FWY#5 を挟んだ反対側には昔 OCIR があったのです。
The morning cruise is close to where OCIR used to be.

ヘルメット / Helmet

1983年4月15日 Openに販売されたツナギにヘルメット姿のミッキーとミニー。
当時現場で被っていたヘルメット。
Before the grand opening of Tokyo Disneyland on April 15, 1983, they sold these matching Mickey and Minnie dolls with construction hard hats for promotion. Pictured on the right is one of the actual hard hats used during the construction.

MOONEYES の Pinstriper Wildman 石井が 日本で Signs & Pinstriping を始めて20年！
その軌跡を追ったイベント Ace High Only One Wildman を MOONEYES Area-1 Garage で開催しています。　Garage ですから窓はありませんし、クラーもありません。
しかもこの猛暑です。でも扇風機はあります。Wildman はこの期間中 Garage に居ますので
是非一度お立ち寄りください。20周年の記念商品もあります。Wildmanがサインをしたくて
うずうずしていますので喜ばせて上げて下さい。

It's been 20 years since MOONEYES Pinstriper Hiro "WILDMAN" Ishii began Signs & Pinstriping in Japan!
Celebrating its success is the event, Ace High Only One Wildman, being held at MOONEYES Area-1 Garage, in Honmoku, Yokohama. It is in the garage so there's no windows, or A/C either.
However, the recent heat. There are electric fans blowing. Wildman is in the garage for the entire duration of the event so if you have a chance, please stop by and visit. There are also limited edition, 20th Anniversary items for sale too. Wildman has been restless because he loves to sign and he'll be delighted if you ask him.

さてそんな Wildman の 20年間を振り返ったインタビューが最近発売になったばかりの 「FlyWheels マガジン」 に掲載されています。　
今まで通説となっていた事が実は違っていたとか。。　このインタビューで Wildman のすべてが理解できます。

VW T-II

土曜日(7月4日) のブログを作っていたら思い出しちゃったのです。 ブログに載せた VW T-2、後日Staff の居眠り運転でこんなになってしまったのです。
While doing the blog last Saturday (July 4), it brought back this memory. The fate of the VW T-2 photo posted to the blog, would end up like this from a Staff member that fell asleep while driving.

第三京浜港北インター出口の分かれ目にまっすぐ突っ込んだのです。
Coming off of Dai-san Keihin Highway, Kouhoku Exit, right on the off ramp where it begins, the car went straight into the median.

深夜、自宅に電話が鳴り
It was late at night when my home phone rang.

スタッフ： 「もしもし・・・です。車ぶつかっちゃって動かないのでそのまま置いて帰っていいですか？」
STAFF: Hello? This is ---. I bumped the car and now it won't move so can I leave it there for now and go?

僕： 寝ぼけながら 「置いて帰るって今どこ？」
ME: (While still half sleeping) Leave it there? Where are you?

スタッフ： 「車は第三京浜の港北インターに下りる本線上にあります」
STAFF: The car is right off of Dai-san Keihin Highway, on top of the median.

僕： 「で君は今どこ」
ME: And, where you at.

携帯電話はまだそんなに普及してない時代ですから、
スタッフ： 「歩いて料金所を出た所の公衆電話からです。板金屋も近いので明日引き取りでいいですか？」

This was a time when mobile phones were still not wide spread, so
STAFF: I walked back to the tollgate where I exited, at a payphone.

ウチの車を修理してくれているAuto Connectionさんは港北インターからすぐだったのですが。。。
Our cars are serviced at Auto Connection and they are real close to Kouhoku Exit, so...

僕： 「良いわけないだろ。そこの高速機動隊へ行って事情を話し、君は捕まっていなさい！」
と言って夜中ノロノロと身柄を引き下げに行ったのです。幸い飲酒運転では無かったのですぐ帰れました。

ME: Absolutely not, obviously. Go to the Expressway Police and discuss the situation with them, you have to turn yourself in!
After saying that, in the midnight hours I when to pick the staff member up. I was grateful it wasn't a drunken driving case so it was over quite quickly and we return home.

この頃、他に２台居眠りで廃車になっています。
Around this time period, there were two other cars that were decommissioned.


その一台は Bonneville Racer、Fred Larsen が新車から乗り毎年Bonnevilleで彼のRace Car のＰｕｓｈ Ｃａｒとして活躍し その後譲ってもらった 1969 El Camino も電柱にぶつかって廃車になりました。
One in particular was Bonneville Racing Legend, Fred Larsen's, purchased and owned since new, used every year as a Push Car for his race car at Bonneville, 1969 El Camino. It was crashed into a telephone pole and decommissioned.

この時も、「も　も　もし　もし・・・・」 当時 営業時間外の電話は恐怖でした。
When that accident happened I got the call again, "Heh, h-hello?" At the time, any phone call I got after hours I already knew something was wrong.

さて引き揚げてきた T-2 は修理不能な為廃車。
Anyway, back to the T-2 story. After I picked up the driver, it was determined not possible to repair the T-2 so it was decommisioned from road use.


ハイエナのように部品を外す T-2 オーナーの２人のスタッフとぶつけた本人です。
Like a pack of Hyenas, these 3 guys took the parts off. Two of them were T-2 owners and the other was the crasher himself.

車はこんなになりましたが本人はご覧通りの筋肉派、ダメージも無くケロッとしているのがしゃくに障ります。
この本人、今は沖縄でスキューバダイビングの Ｓｈｏｐ を経営していますので良かったら行ってあげて下さい！

You can see how the car was severely damaged but the driver, physically well built, escaped without any injury and even acted as if nothing happened, which kind of made me sick.
Speaking of the driver, he now resides in Okinawa and manages a Scuba Diving Shop so if anyone is out that way, feel free to stop by!

Deuce Factory の笠井さんから買ったカッコ良い T-2 だったのに・・・
It was such an awesome T-2 that I purchased from Deuce Factory of Japan's Mr. Shun Kasai...

そう言えば Ｅｌ Cａｍｉｎｏ を潰した奴も今沖縄に居るんだ！
Speaking of which, the "person" that wrecked the El Camino now resides in Okinawa too!

横浜開港150年

Yokohama Port Opening 150th Anniversary

神奈川新聞の横浜開港150周年の記事は1972年の米軍ノースピアです。　
There was an article in the Kanagawa newspaper about the 150th anniversary of the Yokohama port with a picture of US Armed Forces on the north pier in 1972, which is near JR Higashi-Kanagawa train station in Yokohama now..

当時この周辺ではベトナム戦争で壊れたタンク等の車両を修理する為に相模原まで運ぶ大型トレーラをよく見かけたました。
During the Vietnam War, tanks that needed repair were brought here for maintenance and shipped via large trailers to Sagamihara. It was a common sight to see during that time.

ノースピアとは有名なStar Dustと言うBarがある所です。
There is a famous bar called Star Dust on the north pier.

ノースピアの入口　遠くにみなとみらいにある横浜インターコンチネンタルホテルが見えます。
North pier entrance. In the far distance you can see Yokohama Intercontinental Hotel in Minato-mirai.

この橋の先がノースピアです。
On the other side of this bridge is the area of north pier.

橋の手前には有名なStar Dust, 今でも営業しています。
Just before the bridge is the famous Star Dust bar, still in business today.　

JR東神奈川から徒歩5分くらいです。
It's about a 5 minute walk from JR Higashi-Kanagawa station.

Dean MOON and Me at Pomona Swap Meet in 1986

これは、1986年に Dean MOON と Pomona Swap Meet へ行った時の写真です。
This is a picture of Dean MOON and me in 1986 when we went to Pomona Swap Meet.

カートを押せと言う指示を貰い、一緒に歩きまわり、Dean は「MOON buys MOON」と言いながら Old MOON Products を買っていました。Old MOON Products,今では高くなって簡単には買えなくなってしまいました。 Good Ol' Days でした。
I was told to push the cart as we walked around together. Dean would say, "MOON buys MOON," and look for Old MOON Products to buy. Old MOON Products have become expensive today and they aren't easy to buy. That was the Good Ol' Days.

Yokohama JB's Food, Music & Fun

先日、以前務めていた会社の友人から「元上司が横浜関内にBarを開店したので行くけど来ない」と
お誘いを受け興味津津でお邪魔してきました。
The other day, a friend from an old job contacted me with, "An old manager opened up a bar in Yokohama and I'm going to go visit. Do you want to come?" I couldn't resist the temptation and was very interest to see the place so I went along.

The owner worked for more than 30 years in Food & Beverage at Disney. After that, he was the GM at YC&AC (http://www.ycac.net) and now he opened this bar.

そしてトイレも綺麗！だった。飲食店は味は勿論のこと、サービスも勿論、普段お客様の目には入らないキッチンが清潔かどうかを大きなカギですね。そして常に汚れるトイレも綺麗かどうかこの２点でオーナーの姿勢が分かります。
This is probably why his kitchen is so clean! And the restroom is super!
For any restaurant the taste and service is most certainly great, but a key to its success is a clean kitchen even if customs can't see it. Also, the second place is how clean the toilet is. These two represent the owner's attitude.

ライブあり、英語の勉強にもなる？横浜にお越しの際は是非行ってみてください。
オーナーの人柄が分かる素晴らしいお店です。
They have live music, maybe it will help with English studies? If you are going to be in the Yokohama area, it is recommended to make plans for a visit.

先頭を走るBlueのは　”Glory Rod” 1971 NISSAN Gloria Chevy V-8
黄色の小さいのは1970 Toyota Crown Pick Up, Chevy V-8,
Running up in front in Blue is the "Glory Rod" a 1971 Nissan Gloria with a Chevy V-8. The yellow small car is a 1970 Toyota Crown Pick Up, also with a Chevy V-8.

もう一枚はなんと　"MOON Glow" 1975 Mitsubishi Debonair です。
The other one is none other than "MOON Glow" an 1975 Mitsubishi Debonair.

3台共それぞれ健在です。
何時か集まってほしいです。
All three are still alive and well. I would someday like to get all three
together.

昼休みにFly Wheel 誌の及川君のブログを見ていたら
「飛行機が雨漏りで飛ばなかった」ってありました。
During lunch I was reading Fly Wheel magazine's blog by Mr. Oikawa and read about the airplane he was flying being canceled because rain was leaking into the cabin.

10年以上前の事ですが、僕の時は大雨の中、成田空港をLAに向けて滑走し飛行機が上昇し始めた途端、頭上の荷物入れ付近から隣の席へ、ドバーっとバケツをひっくり返したみたいに大量の水が落ちてきました。
It reminded me of a time about 10 years ago when a plane I was on got caught
in a rain storm on the way to LAX from Narita Airport. The plane climbed up
above the rain and all of a sudden from the overhead compartment above the
seat next to me, SPLASH! Like a bucket of water came pouring down.
本当にビックリ！でした。
That was really scary!

それでもそのままLAに飛んで行きましたが。（途中下車できない！）
「いったどこからあの水が室内に入って来たのか？」
LAまでの約9時間、機中でズーっと考えていました。やはり雨漏り以外考えられませんでした。
でも乗務員は慣れっこなのか「すみませーん今拭きますねー」って冷静だったのを覚えています。
ちなみに飛行機会社も及川君を同じでした。
However, it wasn't like we could stop anywhere as we were in-flight so the
plane continued to LA. "Where exactly did all that water come from?"
It takes about 9 hours to LA and after that incident I couldn't think of
anything else but the water leak. Maybe because of practice, I don't know,
but I remember the flight crew being very calm and helpful. Interestingly
enough, that flight was the same airlines as the one Mr. Oikawa was one.

70's

水曜日からChallengerがピンストライプの仕事でMOON Garageに入っていました。
車を見ながら派手だなーと思っていたら、木曜日にはArea-1の駐車場に懐かしいカローラが止まっていました。
Since Wednesday, this Challenger has been at MOON Garage for pinstripe work.
While looking at the car and thinking how flashy it was, on Thursday this nostalgic Toyota Corolla was parked at Area-1.

一瞬の70年代でした。
It was a 70s moment.

Mr. Blueのブログを見たら、「三重県の SHOE BOX の川村社長が、わざわざ横浜の田舎まで来てくれて・・・
I saw the following on Mr. Blue's blog: "Mr. Kawamura, the owner of SHOE BOX located in Mie-ken south of Osaka, made a special visit all the way out to the Yokohama ...

それもなんと、Hemi 1/2 カローラで！ほぼ毎日、足として使っている様で、流石！「旧車は出来るだけしょっちゅう動かしている方がいい！」と言っていますが、
On top of that, he came with the 1969 Toyota Corolla 1/2 Hemi!　which was build by MOONEYES about 6-7 years ago. He has been using this to get around almost everyday, which is good! It's important that owners of old cars move them around as much as possible."

彼に譲ったこの旧車Crown Pick Upは今どうなっているのでしょう。
Although that was said, this 1970 Toyota Crown Pick Up was turned over to his care and I wonder what state it's in now.

「旧車は出来るだけしょっちゅう動かしている方がいい！」　なんて言っていますが最近は軽トラしか乗っている姿を見た事ありません。
"It's important that owners of old cars move them around as much as possible." Mr. Blue says that but I've only seen him driving his Japanese size small-truck and nothing else.

「要らなくなったら戻します」との約束で持って行きましたがもう返してもらってもしょうがない状態なんでしょう。誰か画像あったら送ってください。
I said, "When you don't want it anymore, bring it back." He promised and left with the car but it's probably not in any usable condition to even return now. If anybody has a picture of it, please send it to me.

ところでこのCrown Pick Up、まだMOONEYES Open前　Mr. Blueから購入しかけたのですが
Mr. Blue、昔も今と変わらずのゴウツクバリ、結局値段が合わず購入できませんでした。
Incidentally, I wanted to buy this 1970 Toyota Crown Pick Up from Mr. Blue before MOONEYES opened for business in 1986. A long time ago, not much different than now, Mr. Blue was very stubborn and wouldn't come down on the price so I didn't buy it.

もう一台は、昔のMr. Blueの廃車置場（あれ販売車だったのかな？）にあったCrown Pick Up。
これも値段が合わず購入できませんでした。こうしてMr. Blueは車を皆、土に返して行くのでしょう。
He had another one, a delicensed 1970 Toyota Crown Pick Up that was parked in the back (I wonder if that was even for sale?) but a price couldn't be agreed on and it wasn't purchased. Just like this, Mr. Blue would rather return all the cars to the earth.

あのPick Upも土に帰っていないとは保障の限りではありませんね。
If that Pick Up wasn't returned to the earth, it would only be because of someone saving it.

MOON ILLUSTRATED #3, KAWASAKI W1 Chopper

4月20日の発売を目指し MOON Illustrated Magazine(MIM) No. 3の制作が着々と進んでいます。
今回は約228ページ中 75%が商品カタログ、残り25%が記事となる予定です。
Cruisin別冊として昨年は4月と10月の年2回発行しました。No.1は商品カタログ総ページの75%と記事25%、10月発行分 No.2 は25%がカタログ、なぜかと言うとNo.2に掲載される商品は基本的に4月発売のNo.1以降に登場した商品と秋冬物の商品が中心となっているので秋冬物スモールカタログまたはカタログの補足版的要素があり、その分総ページの残り75%が読み応えのある記事となりました。No.2からは日本語/英語のバイルンガルとなり海外の方からも好評です。また少しですが僕もページを貰い、作文を載せてもらっています。その作文が結構大変で何を書こうか色々悩みます。
Aiming for a April 20th release, MOON Illustrated Magazine (MIM) No. 3 is steadily making progress. This volume is projected to be a total of 288 pages with 75% of the content being catalog products and 25% consisting of articles.
As a Cruisin Magazine Special Issue, last year it was released in April and October, a biannual. The first volume (No. 1) was 75% product catalog and the remaining 25% article contents. Then in October, No. 2 was 25% products and 75% articles. It turned out that was because the products featured were for the most part released after No. 1 was issued - Winter/Spring being the centerpiece. It was basically a small catalog or supplement catalog with worthwhile reading filling in 75%. Starting with No. 2 featured bilingual content in Japanese/English which broadened its sale and reached international readers.
I also contributed content with my own written article, although it was short. That article was very difficult because I contemplated on choosing a topic.

題材を求め古い写真を物色していたら、東京原宿 表参道にあるキディー ランド前で1973年に撮った　Kawasaki W-1 Chopperの写真が出てきました。
To go with the topic I chose, I was searching through old photos and happened to find a photo of a Kawasaki W-1 Chopper on Omotesando (avenue) in Harajuku, Tokyo in front of Kiddy-land in 1973.

当時Suzuki Van Van 90だったか125だったか良く覚えていませんが、そのChopperとこのW-1　2台がレオンと言う喫茶店前にとまっているのを見た物です。古い写真を物色していると何時の間にか見入ってしまい、結局何を書くのかは先送りになってしまいましたが、だいぶ方向性は見えてきました。締切は間近です。年２回しか発行しない雑誌に僕はこんなですが、月刊誌を作っている方や記事を投稿している方は毎月の事ですから休む暇なしですね。心から尊敬します！
皆さんMIM#3をお楽しみに！！
At the time, I don't remember if it was a 125cc or a 90cc Suzuki Van Van but that Chopper and this W-1 were stopped in front of a coffee shop called LEON when I saw the two. While looking through old photos it's easy to lose track of time and before I knew it the purpose of going through the photos was completely forgotten about. Writing the article was postponed and the deadline was too soon. This is how I was for a biannual publication but for people that submit articles regularly or for those that make monthly magazines, they probably don't ever have free time. You all have my deepest respect!
I hope everyone is looking forward to MIM#3!!

ドラッグレースが富士で！　Drag Race at Fuji Int'l Speedway

今年のSuper American Festival(aka SAF)/スーパーアメリカン フェステイバル 通称”アメフェス”で　久しぶりにDrag Raceが開催される事になった言う情報が入って来た！

素晴らしい！　いったい何年振り？3-4年振り？はっきりは覚えていませんがついに主催者の思いが届いたのですね。物事強く思い続ければ叶えられる事もあると言う事です。立派です。

It has been a long time, but information has been announced that this year's Super American Festival (aka "SAF") will feature Drag Races at Fuji International Speedway!

This is wonderful news! How many years has it been? At least 3-4 years? I don't remember exactly but finally the wishes of the promoters have been granted.

When you hope and wish strongly enough, things do come true. This is great.

Dｒag Raceと言えば197７年7月に米軍立川基地飛行場が閉鎖になり、日本でのDrag Raceは休息期間に入りましたが、翌1978年に富士スピードウエイで開催されたのがこのレース、参加台数が多すぎて３台で走ると言う珍レースだったらしい。と言うのはこの時代僕は居なかったので良く知りません。

Speaking of Drag Races in Japan, it was in July 1977 when Tachikawa Air Base in Tokyo had closed. Drag Race in Japan was kinda dead. The following year in 1978, drag races were held at Fuji Speedway and there were so many participants that three cars raced each time.

I wasn't in Japan during that time so I don't know the full details.

これらはBlue MaxのDaigoが送ってくれた写真なんです。富士山が綺麗ですね。
こんな天気が良い富士スピードウエイって記憶にありません。

PS:今年のアメフェスの情報に関しては主催者にお聞きください。

This was a photo sent to me from my friend in Japan. Mt. Fuji looks beautiful.
I can't recall Fuji Speedway ever having this kind of weather.

Dean MOON, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth and me.

昔々Ed "Big Daddy" Rothと夕食を取っていたある晩、「明日出かけるから一緒に行こう」と誘われ、行った先がMr. Joe "The Kustom" Morenoってオヤジの家。
このオヤジ、当時日本でも結構有名。
A long time ago, one night when having dinner with Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, he said, "I'm going out tomorrow so why don't you come with me."
He invited me to Mr. Joe "The Kustom" Moreno's ranch house.

彼の大きな家でコレクション等を色々見せてもらい、Joeから「これ」って渡されたのが、僕はガン、Big Daddyはマシンガン（どちらももちろんオモチャ）。
外に連れ出され、「俺達に明日はない」みたいなポーズを取らされ撮った写真がこれ、

僕はまだ30代、Big Daddyも50代、若かった！
His place with all kinds of collections and things to look at. Joe was like, "Here," and tossed me a gun and Big Daddy a machine gun (both, of course, were toys) and took us outside and had us pose like Bonnie and Clyde. This is the photo, I was in my 30s and Big Daddy was in his 50s, we were so young!


こっちの写真はDean MOONとSan Diegoへ買い物に行った時、途中のGas Stationで道を聞くDean。
Deanが何を買いに行ったのかは覚えていないけど　僕の用事にも付き合ってくれた1986年当時の写真。
どちらも楽しい思い出です。
This is a photo in 1986 of Dean MOON stopped at a gas station to ask directions in San Diego to buy something. I don't remember what Dean was going to buy but we did a lot of things together back then.
These are both great memories.

HONDA Dream CB500

Honda Dream CB500、ホンダドリームです。名前がいいですね。
70年代は夢に向かっていた時代だったのでしょうか？
僕はまだ高校生だったころですから　毎日が楽しくてしょうがない時代でした。
This is a Honda Dream CB500. What a great name, isn't it.
Was the 70s an era about reaching your dreams?
I was still in high school around that time there was nothing to do but enjoy each day.

色々なバイクを所有したり、友人から借りたりして原宿、青山、赤坂周辺を毎日走り廻ったその時代　唯一転ばなかったバイクはこのCB500と友人から長期拝借していたXS-1でした。
I owned various bikes, even borrowed from friends and rode around Harajuku, Aoyama and the outskirts of Akasaka in Tokyo everyday - those were the days. One of the only bikes I didn't fall down on was this CB500 as well as an XS-1 that I had borrowed for a long period from a friend.

このCB、ヨシムラの手曲げ製集合マフラーにサイレンサー代わりにグラスウールを突っ込んでいましたが、加速するたびに燃えてしまい、すぐ直管になってしまったのでこのサイレンサーを作ってもらったら
少し長くなってしまったのです。ホイルはボラーニ、エンジンはヨシムラでボアアップ、コンチネンタルハンドルにカワサキのヘッドライトステー、昔はこの程度でもCafeなんて言っていたのです。
The CB was equipped with the famous 4-into-1 hand bent exhaust by Pop Yoshimura and used an "SOS" as a silencer, but didn't work well. Each time the bike accelerated, it would burn and quickly resulted in a straight pipe. So I ended up getting a silencer made for it although it was a little too long. The bike also had Borrani Aluminum rims, the engine was souped up by Pop Yoshimura, it had Continental handle bars and a Kawasaki headlight bracket. Back then, even this slight degree angle was considered Cafe racer style.

この後すぐバーエンドミラーがポピュラーになりましたがその頃には僕は1967 VW T-IIに乗っていました。このCBで中央高速をスっ飛ばし八王子にあったヨシムラを訪ねたものでした。
Just after this time period, bar-end mirrors became popular but around then I was riding a 1967 VW T-II. I used to take the CB on the Chuo Expressway and fly over to Hachioji where Yoshimura Racing was located.

そしてそれから約36年経ってまたCB500を買ってしまいました。

昨年７月、European Bug Inに行った際見つけてしまったのです。

Where do you think this CB is from? It's from the Netherlands. I found it last year in July while on my trip to the European Bug In. I requested the impossible from Flat-4 president Mr. Komori and Mr. Nao Fujita and had it put into a container with other things that was heading back to Japan. Thank you very much!

このPaint, Seat, 4 into 1 muffler何とも言えませんね。　
そしてこのタペット調整用ホールの飾りボルト、当時は当たり前にあった物が今では手に入り憎いのでこんな物でも付いていると感動です。まずは　走るようにする事が先決のようです。
I love the 70s era Paint, Seat and 4-into-1 muffler though. The decorative bolt on top of the head, at the time, of course there were many everywhere but now a days it's difficult to get one's hands on so seeing this kind of stuff on a bike is really impressive.
First priority is to get it running and registered.

古い写真を整理していたらもう一枚、これは友人のCB750
As I was sorting through old photos, out came another one.

これでも天現寺周辺（現山王ホテル前）でトラックの後ろに突っ込み転んでいます。
このシートですがシート屋にアメリカのChoppeｒ雑誌を持って行き、段が付いたシートを作ろうとしたのですが理解されずなぜか和式トイレみたいのが完成。
その後、この後ろ部分がどんどん伸びたのが族バイクのシートにある背もたれが長ーい奴に変化したのです。このシートがその起源ですね。これの前にはそんなシートありませんでした。
This was my friend's CB750. I rode it into the tail end of a truck near Tengenji, Tokyo (in front of the Sanno Hotel).
The seat was custom made. We took an American Chopper magazine to a seat shop and requested one like the picture but for some reason they didn't understand and the final result was a Japanese style toilet looking thing. Later on, the rear portion of the seat started stretching out.
It eventually turned into a back rest like the Bosozoku (Japanese biker gangs) bikes. It was the beginning of that style of seat too. Before that, those seats did not exist.

ついでにもう一枚、Blue Maxのダイゴこと中村大吾はこのSuzuki ハスラー250 モトクロッサーで川崎から青山まで通学していました。後ろは僕のDT250。
当時でもモトクロッサーで街を走ると捕まりました。
昔も今も変わりませんよ。
And just one more, a friend of mine, DAIGO of Blue Max, Daigo Nakamura's Suzuki Hustler 250 Motocrosser. He would commute to school from Kawasaki to Aoyama in Tokyo. In the back is my Yamaha DT250. Even in those days, you could be arrested if you drove a motocrosser on the streets.
That hasn't changed even today.

横浜 フォード

1927年～41年まで横浜それもMOONEYES Area-1のすぐ近くにフォードの横浜工場があったそうです。
There used to be a Ford Assembly Plant in Yokohama, close to MOONEYES Area-1, from 1927 through 1941.

後ろに見えるのがベイブリッジ、右方向が本牧、左方向が東京です
In the background is the Bay Bridge, on the right side is HONMOKU and to the left is TOKYO.

部品はUSAから輸入し日本でノックダウン生産していた工場がこの後ろの建物です。
Parts were imported from the USA and assembled in Japan at a Knockdown Production factory which stood behind this building.

その工場で作られた一台がこの１９３４年型フォード フェートンです。もちろん右ハンドル、キロ表示のメーターです。
One of those vehicles that was built there was this 1934 Ford Phaeton. Of course, being built in Japan, it's right-hand-drive (RHD) and the gauges are in kilometers.

第二次大戦時横浜は空襲で焼け野原になったそうですが　この土地は戦前フォードが持っていた物だったので（戦中は軍に接収されていたそうです）、米軍はやがて来る戦後を考えてか、この地域を空襲しなかったようで、当時の建物がそのまま残っていました。ですからこの建物の面構えはそれとなくＵＳ的ではありませんか？
During WWII, Yokohama was heavily air-raided and burnt to the ground. However, some area survived as this Ford was build on these very grounds before the war (it was supposedly confiscated by the military during the war).Perhaps for post-war reasons there were places that the military did not air-raid, thus some buildings survived and were used again. Maybe that is why this building has a US-look?

その横浜、2009年来年は開港150周年だそうです。
In 2009, next year, the city of Yokohama will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the port.

ショーまであと10日

昨日　コンテナからUSからの車とバイクを引き出しました。
The cars and motorcycles that were shipped from the US were pulled out of the containers yesterday.
この時期になるとショーが始まるって感じがしてきます。
At this time of year, I always get this feeling inside, like the show is about to begin.

バイクもベンダーブースも過去最高のエントリー数となり会場はパンパンな感じです。
motorcycles and vendor booth entries reached a record high that the show space is mind blowing.

そうです、パンパンと言えばMOONEYES Mail Magazine EditorのTankはパンパンになったほほを押さえ「なぜこんなに？！？！」って感じでボーゼンとしていました
Yes, speaking of mind blowing, MOONEYES Mail Magazine Editor TANK, that handled the floor plan, felt the same way. "How could this be?!?!" Seen here in a daze.

California Sun Shine

MOON Illustrated 2号の製作に取り掛かり、古いネガを整理していたら、何てことない70年代後半か80年代前半の街の一コマがあったので、プリントしてみました。

Production has started for MOON Illustrated no.2 so we were sorting through old negatives when out came these old slides from the later half of the 70s to early 80s. So they were printed.

405 San Diego FWYと、101 Ventura FWYが交差する、Vannuys付近です。 スクールバスだけは当時も今も変わりませんが、他の車は殆ど街で見なくなりました。California Blue Plateがいいですね。

Vannuys area where 405 San Diego FWY and 101 Ventura FWY cross over. Aside from the School Bus, which hasn't changed even today, just about all the other cars are not seen on the streets anymore. The California Blue Plate is real cool.

ごく普通の駐車場です。 67 Camaro RSは、リアにFat Tire、こう言うHot Rodはどこにも居ましたし、セリカも良く見かけました。
This is an ordinary parking lot. '67 Chevy Camaro RS with FAT rear tires. Hot Rods like these where everywhere, even Toyota Celica was real common to see.

当時住んでいた大学の寮から駐車場を撮った、学生達の車です。 　　　　　　 Ford カプリが2台、あれだけポピュラーだったカプリもまったく見なくなりました。 Ford はFord でも、ヨーロッパFord の車は日本にもCA にも残っていませんね。 そしてまたもやセリカです。それも2台、停まっている車も、歩いている学生達も、70年代していますね。
The university student that owned the car that was photographed in the parking lot of the college dormitory where I had been living at the time. Two Ford Capris. That popular of a car, now a days you don't even see a Capri. Ford in Europe, Ford in Japan, just Ford as Ford cars from that period don't seem to exist anymore. And lastly, yet another Celica. And two of them at that. The cars stopped, the students walking, it really has that 70s feeling.

My dorm room desk. Do you remember the "FEN" stickers? My friend from Japan sent it to me. Looks like in Japan lifted 4WD Hilux trucks were popular.

新車のC-10トラックと、知り合いだった明るいアミーゴ達です。 この時代のCaliforniaはナゼか明るいですね。
Brand new C-10 truck and bright amigo friends. For some reason this period in California seems really bright.

古いファイル

何故か「Devin」の資料がほしい、「MOON Transporter」の資料は無いか？とか、海外から立て続けにリクエストが入り、Dean MOONの古いファイルを探していたら、1951年12月号、Hop Up マガジンを発見！


なんと表紙には、"MOON Bros 141mph Sedan"。
昔 Deanは、兄と一緒にレースをやっていたそうです。


そして中ページには何と、Fred Larsenが彼のRoadsterで、141.73mph、2等賞と掲載されいるではありませんか。　
Dean MOONはファイルをしっかり作ってあったので、50年後の今でも大変助かります。

＊Devinとは、MOONBEAMのベースとなったキットカーで、VWベースのキットもありました。


＊このMOON Transporterは、50年代メルセデスが作った物を真似て、El Caminoのキャビンを利用して作られた物を、後にDean MOONが手に入れた物です。
今、それを蘇らせようとしている人から、資料の要請を受けたのです。

For some reason, there was a request from abroad for "Devin" materials and another request for "MOON Transporter" materials - if anything still existed.
While searching through Dean MOON's old files, this December 1951 HOP UP magazine was found with the "MOON Bros 141mph Sedan" on the front cover.

A long time ago, Dean and his older brother used to race together as MOON Bros.

Then within the pages, low and behold a photo of Fred Larsen and his "beautiful metallic green Roadster" that turned 141.73mph to tie for second place!

Dean MOON had always kept really good files and even after 50 years have survived.

* Devin is the name of a kit car that the MOONBEAM was based from. Devin also made VW based kit cars as well.

* This MOON Transporter was an idea taken from a 50s Mercedes, but built using a 59 El Camino cab.
Dean MOON acquired it after it was started.
Now, this idea is possibly being revived and the person responsible is the one requesting the materials.

Hot Rod Magazine 1975年5月号

カタログを作る時期が来ました。と言っても遅いくらいですが、そんな事もあり古い写真をあさっていたら、1974年にCaliforniaに行った友人が1976年に送ってくれた写真が出てきました。CATの帽子、BellのJacket、電話機、そして椅子が70年代していますね！


友人のT.C君

壁に掛かっている写真はChicoの1970 Chevelle SSと、Oyabunと呼ばれていた友人のDuster 340です。場所はCoster MesaにあったChicoのハウス、このハウスには僕も大変お世話になりました。この写真を撮った場所は多分Chico's Parentのハウス前だと思います。とここまでは友人のUSA近況報告の写真ですが、この写真はただこれだけの話では終わりませんでした。

当時僕は日本で解体寸前の1960 Thunderbirdを持っていて、Hot Rodするのに何か資料はないか、洋書を扱う東京青山の島田洋書や銀座のイエナ書店、原宿のキデイランドなどでHot Rod Magazine、Hot RoddingやCar Craftを立ち読みし、気に入った雑誌だけ購入していたのです。当時、Hot Rod Magazineは750円くらい。値段は今とあまり変わりませんが、大きく違うのはアルバイトの時給。当時、時給は250円位からだったと思います。だから簡単には買えない事情がありました。またThunderbirdをHot Rodにするなんて言う人はUSAではあまりいなかったのでしょう。 どの雑誌をみてもThunderbirdは出てこないのです。対象車ではなかったのですが1960 Thunderbirdが僕に買えた唯一のUSA車だったので、これを何とかする以外他にUSA車に乗れる方法はなかったのです。

そんなある日、遂にHot Rod Magazine 1975年5月号の読者投稿欄に、1959年ですが同型のThunderbirdが載っていたのです。それも白黒の小さい写真、でもこの1枚でこの雑誌を購入しました。その後、雑誌を眺めているとThunderbirdの下にはChico Kodama、Kouichi Kurosawaって日本人の名前でHot Rodが2台映った写真が載っていて、「へー凄いなー」と思った以外、その二人が誰であるか当時は知る由もありませんでした。しかしその1年後、友人が送ってくれた写真の後ろに写っている2台を観て「あれ！」っとなったわけです。こんな事ってあるのでしょうか？って位ビックリました。





そんな事があり1977年この友人を頼りにThunderbirdの部品購入の為Californiaを訪れChicoを紹介してもらい、Oyabunとも会い、その後1978年にCaliforniaに行くきっかけにもなる雑誌だったのです。このHot Rod Magzineは僕と一緒に1978年USAに行き、3年半をUSAで過ごし、一緒に日本に帰ってきたアメリカ帰りです。なぜか分かりませんが持っていた洋書を全て（と言っても数冊ですが）USAに持って行ったのです。なぜでしょう？

The time for making MOONEYES Annual Catalog has came. But it was already little late to start, and I was looking through old pictures again and found a picture taken by my friend in 1976 at California. The CAT baseball cap, Bell Racing jacket, phone and chair are so 70s'. The picture on wall is Chico's 1970 Chevelle SS and his friend called Oyabun's 1970 Duster 340. It was taken at Chico's house in Costa Mesa and I visited this house so many times. I think this picture was taken at in front of Chico's Parents house. That was little update about my friend in USA but there is more about this picture.

Back then in Japan I had a 1960 Thunderbird which was on the verge of falling apart and I was looking for source of ideas to make it in to a Hot Rod at book stores like "Shimada Import Books" in Aoyoama Tokyo, "IENA Book Store" in Ginza and "Kiddy Land" in Harajuku, both were in Tokyo where they had imported magazines from USA such as Hot Rod Magazine, Hot Rodding and Car Craft which I flipped through and purchased only the one I liked. Hot Rod Magazine was about 750yen ($7.50) back then. The price hasn't change much but hourly-wage was low as 250yen per hour($2.50) and I couldn’t purchase them easily then.

And since not many people tried to make a Hot Rod out of such Thunderbird in USA, there was hardly any Thunderbird on those magazines. The 1960 Thunderbird was not suitable for Hot Rod but it was the only American car I could buy and I had no choice but making Hot Rod out of this car.

Then one day, I finally found Thunderbird on magazine, It was a picture of same style Thunderbird but a 1959 model on readers column of Hot Rod Magazine 1975 May issue. The picture was a small black & white one but that was enough to make me purchase this magazine. After while when I was looking at magazine, below the picture of Thunderbird I found picture of two Hot Rods with two Japanese names Chico Kodama, Koichi Kurosawa. I had no idea who they were then and just thought that it was amazing to be on magazine. Oh! Japanese!! But when my friend sent this picture a year later, I was amazed to find the same two cars from the magazine. How can this be possible? I was so amazed.

There was some strange co incidence but this magazine was the key for me, I went to California in 1977 and visited my friend to purchase parts for Thunderbird and met Chico and Oyabun through him and this magazine lead me to go to California in 1978. This Hot Rod Magazine went to California with me in 1978, spent Three and a half years and returned to Japan from USA with me. I don’t know why but I took all my American Hot Rods Magazine purchased in Japan to USA(I only had few back then, though). Why was that?

1988年の写真

写真を整理していたら懐かしい写真が出てきました。
Dean MOONのWife、Shirely(シャーリー)がDean MOON Jr. と2人で1988年、2回目のSCNにやって来た時の写真です。まだオープンして2年に満たない当時のMOONEYES 元町ショップ、そして2人が抱えるのはEd "Big Daddy" Rothに描いてもらったサインボードです。彼の書体が一番好きです。アメリカって感じの書体ですね。Deanは日本語がまったく分からないのに誰かにくっついては伊勢崎町とか遊び廻っていたました。もっともUSに居ても同じで、言葉が分かる分からないは彼には関係ないようです。

While sorting pictures, a good old picture came out.
Picture was taken when Dean Moon's wife Shirely came to the 2nd Annual Street Car Nationals in 1988 with Dean Moon Jr. the MOONEYES Motomachi shop, less than two years since its opening, and the signboard they held was signed by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. I like his lettering the most. Dean Jr. who didn't understand a word of Japanese and location managed to hang around "Isezaki-cho" with who ever took him around. But he is like that in USA too and seems like language doesn't matter for him.

トレール車購入！YAMAHA 90 HT-1

ミニトレGT50、HT90、DT-1、DT250と乗り継いで来たので、元々トレール車も好きなんです。特に70年代のヤマハやカワサキの2ストローク、そしてスクランブラーと呼ぶべきなのかHondaの4ストロークSLシリーズなど、70年代の日本のトレール車はカッコいいです。ここ数年、密かにミニトレを探していました。ミニトレではありませんが、なんと1970年型 ヤマハ90 HT-1を見つけてしまったのです。


しかもワンオーナー、37年前のバイクなのに走行距離はなんとたったの1万キロ。キック1発でエンジンは掛かるし、ほぼオリジナル。しかも取り扱い説明書まで付いています。所々疲れていますが、でも1970年型だから仕方ありません。



HT-1って名前がカッコイイ！この後はHT90と呼ばれるようになりますが、やはり「なんとか かんとか"ワン"」がカッコイイ。当時のヤマハトレール車兄弟の一台です。90ｃｃのHT-1に始まり、AT-1(125)、CT-1(175)、DT-1(250)＆RT-1(360)、それにミニトレの50＆60ｃｃが加わるフルラインアップ。多分HT90だったら買わなかったと思います。"HT-1" Sounds Good！これです。 このHT-1、タイヤも37年前のですから、ごらんの通りヒビだらけ。これだけは取り替えないとちょっと怖いですね。あと、タンクのエンブレムがありません。これからゆっくり探す事にします。



そういえば昔買った雑誌にHT-1が出ていた事を思い出し、書庫をあさってみたら出てきました。



昭和45年発売の、その名も「オートバイ CHOPPER特集」という、なんと今の時代にピッタリの雑誌がありました。その中にHT-1のインプレッションが掲載されていたのです。何か、70年代の日本製バイクってUSAの香りがしませんか？それは今の話で、当時はススキが生い茂る仮設コースを走り廻っていました。嬉しい1台を遂に手に入れました。ガレージの中はこんなになっています。



I have owned Yamaha Mini Trail GT50, HT90, DT-1, DT250, and originally like the Trail bikes. Specially the 70's Yamaha, Kawasaki 2 stroke, and a scrambler should I call Hondas 4 stroke SL series, 70's Japanese Trail bikes are cool. In these years I was secretly looking for Mini TrailsGT or JT but instead of Mini Trail, found 1970 Yamaha 90 HT-1. And it was one owner, 37 years old bike but only 10,000km (6,250miles) was its mileage it starts on one kick, almost all original and has instruction book too. Some part looks worn out but that's made in 1970, can't be helped.

Name "HT-1" is good, after this model it is changed to HT90, any way "something - One" is the cool one among the Yamaha Trail brothers. It had started with 90cc HT-1, 125cc AT-1, 175cc CT-1, 250cc DT-1, 360cc RT-1, and mini trail 50 & 60cc are added to make full line up. CT-1 was export only. I wouldn't buy it, if it was HT90. "HT-1" Sounds Good! That's it. This HT-1 has 37 years old tires and its all cracked on side, this is too much so they need to be changed. Plus Tank has no emblem. I will take my time to look for them.

I remember there was article on HT-1 on some old magazine I bought long time ago and looked for in archive and found it. The magazine was sold on 1970 with name "Motorcycle Chopper Special" which was just the name for the time. There was an impression article on HT-1. Doesn't 70's Japanese motorcycle have smell from USA, that’s the story now and back then I was riding around on the temporary off road course in the tall Japanese pampas grass field. I have finally got one I like in my hand. This is how it looks inside the Garage.

50th L.A. Roadsters 2007

L.A. Roadstersはその名の通りRoadsterしかエントリーできません。Roadsterのみが会場内に入れます。会場に隣接した駐車場では、Swap Meetと会場に入れない車で大きなショー会場となってしまいます。


While I was walking from parking lot, Deron and Fish from Burbank Choppers drove by and gave me ride closer to the show space so I didn't have to walk a long way. Thank you!
駐車場を歩いていたらChoppersのDeronとFishが通りがかり乗せてもらえたので、歩かずに済みました。


They are going to Swap Meet, so walking from here.
彼らはSwap Meetへ行くのでそこから先は徒歩です。

朝のうちはSwap Meet。クルマから部品まで、とにかく珍しい物が沢山あります。Swap Meetを見るだけで午前中一杯掛かり、駐車場の車を見ていたらとても一日では廻りきれませんし、肝心のショー会場内に展示されたRoadsterを見る時間が無くなってしまいます。そんな感じですから午前中のMOONEYESブースは暇でした。午後になって、段々と会場へ人が流れてきますが、ここの閉場は4PM。朝は6時からですが夕方4時には閉会です。この時期の南カリフォルニアは夜8時近くまで明るいですから、閉会後家族とゆっくり父の日Dinnerを取れるようにしているのでしょうか？

Cool! Nice 32 drive like as is, the price is $27,000, Cheap? Well of course.
カッコイイ、このまま乗っても良い感じの32年、値段は27,000ドル。安いですね、当然ですね。

The average age of this show is elderly but including all surrounding Swap Meet and so, will make average age much younger. USA Auto Industry Market has really matured.
ショー会場全体の平均年齢は高いですが、その周りも入れればもっと下がります。USAの自動車マーケットは成熟しきっていますね。

イクラさんも来ていました。この前に会ったのはたしか1月のGrand National Roadster Show、彼もこの手が好きなんですね。


The Image Craft from Nara Central Japan, President Mr. Kishihara(Center), I see him more in events in USA than in Japan. This time he has brought his own company products, electric power steering kit for Street Rodders from Japan. The elderly takes big share in this industry, may become a big hit.
イメージクラフト、奈良の岸原社長(中央)、彼とは日本で合うよりUSAのイベント会う事が多いです。今回は自社開発のStreet Rodderに装着できるパワーステアリングキットを日本から持参し展示していました。年配者が多いこの業界、一発大当たりになるかもしれません。

ショー会場内はこんな感じ、見渡す限り32年のような。

主催Clubは50年の歴史があり、当時20歳の人でも今は70歳。朝早く、終わりが早いのも何となく納得できますね。30歳代で開催したMOONEYES Street Car Nationalsも今年は21回目を迎え、関係者も50歳を越しています。あと20年も経てば70歳、40年もやるのかな？と考えるのはやめておきます。Dean MOONも自分の34 Ford Roadsterで参加していた、歴史あるイベントです。

"50th L.A. Roadsters 2007"
At L.A. Roadsters, as its name Roadster is the only cars that are accepted for an entry. The Roadster can go inside the show space. The parking lot on the side has Swap Meet and Cars couldn't go inside are parked which looks like another car show event.

Morning is the Swap Meet, Cars and Parts, many hard to find parts are there. Swap Meet takes all morning to see, and cars in parking lot will take more than one day, and don't forget the Roadster show entry cars inside too. So it was not so clouded in the morning at MOONEYES booth inside. The booth is filled with more people in the afternoon but the show close on 4 o'clock, show starts from six in the morning but close early on four. The Southern California in this time of a year is blight until 8 o'clock in the night so may be its so the entrant can take dinner with family after the show for Fathers' Day.

The hosting club has 50 years of its history, the 20's back then are now in 70's, so not too hard to understand early in the morning and close early makes sense. The MOONEYES Street Car Nationals has first hosted in our 30's, now its 21st show and we are in our 50's. 20 years more and we will reach our 70's, in 40 years?! well lets not think about that much. Dean Moon used to entry in this historical show with his 34 Ford Roadster.

カリフォルニア Long Beachで開催されたTOYOTA Day

5月12日(土)、California, Long Beachで"12th Anuual All TOYOTAFEST"が開催されました。

1999年に参加した時の写真が残っていますが、この時もKannon V-8で参加しました。

その後Kannon V-8は一度日本に行き、2年前にUSAへ戻ってきました。USAと日本を行ったり来たりですが、定住はCaliforniaになりそうです。当時はWoodyのイベントで有名なMoonlight Beachと呼ばれるBeachのCliffで開催されていました。参加台数もあまり多くなく、Club Meetingという感じでしたが、当時TOYOTAの集まりなんて珍しいので、1996年頃から参加していたと思います。

12回目となるTOYOTAFEST。今年は「TOYOTA北米輸出50周年」という節目なのでTOYOTAのサポートもあり、とても見ごたえのあるイベントとなりました。


エントリー車の年式は関係ない様なのでかなりの数の高年式車の参加もあり、特にTOYOTAブースではCamry & TundraのNASCARと共に、有名ビルダーによりカスタムされたCamryとAvalonが展示されていました。

最近の車は素のままで十分カッコイイですから、外観をカスタムするといっても、ドアハンドルを取り去るとかPaintするとか、ホイルを交換、グリル変更、とかやれる事の範囲が大変狭くなってきました。CamryもAvalonも、15年くらい前にBOYDSが製作していたスタイルと基本的には変わりません。ホイルはその時代を象徴しますから、ホイルが大きなポイントですね。Kannon V-8もホイルはいまだにBOYDSを履いていますから、見る人によってはいつごろ作られた車か分かると思います。1994年に製作したのでもう13年も前の車なんですね。月日が経つのが早いです。

スターレットにフェンダーミラーのクレシーダでいいのかな？フェンダーミラーは大人気、純正がほしいなんて言われても無いですよね。このクルマはGT053をうまく使っていたから合格です。


トヨタ ランドクルーザー？違います。
ICONというマーケットにある部品と自作のBody等で作られたクローン、10万ドルくらいするそうです。モーターはChevyでした。TOYOTA車の中で年式に関係なく値段が付いているのはランドクルーザーです。結構高いですが、これ程高くはありません。次はついに2000GTクローンの登場となるのでしょう。

このEventには多くの人が日本から来ていましたし、取材陣も多かったですね。

さて、1等賞を取ったのはDrag Race仕様の69年カローラ。MOONEYESが選んだのでは無く、審査員が選考した車に副賞としてMOON Discを提供しましたが、偶然とはいえまったく僕のTasteでした。Deuce Factoryの笠井氏も会場で受賞されていました。




9月29日(土)には同じ会場で、今度は"旧車集会 - Japanese Classic Car Show"が開催されます。楽しみですね！　

12th Annual All TOYOTAFEST
12th Annual All TOYOTAFEST was held in Long Beach, California on Saturday May 12th.
There were picture left from 1999 and Kannon Crown V-8 was taken as entry too then. The Kannon V-8 was once taken back to Japan and returned to USA about two years ago. It has been going back and forth between USA and Japan but looks like its going to stay in California.

Back then it was hosted at the beach cliff at Moonlight Beach where it is famous for Woody Events. The entry were not so many, it was just like club meeting but TOYOTA meeting were rare so we have been going to the show from 1996.

The 12th TOYOTAFEST showed strong support from TOYOTA as this year was 50th anniversary for US export. The year of make was not regulated for entry so there were many newer years cars at show especially the TOYOTA booth showed Camry & Tundra NASCAR and famous builder's custom Camry and Avalon were showed.

Current cars are cool as is and exterior customs are regulated to like shaving door handles, paint, wheel, grill changed and so regulated to few things. The Camry and Avalon are both same taste in what BOYDS were making 15 years ago. The wheel represent the year so its big point. Kannon V-8 still has BOYDS for wheel and some people can tell when car was made. It was made in 1994, so it has been 13 years old. Time flies by.

Starlet and Cressida with fender mirror, I think its right? The Fender mirrors are very popular, if we get asked for original pair, don't have those original pair in stock. This Cressida is great! Shows the nice way to use GT053 Mirror.

This one is called "ICON", it is a clone with own made body and market parts. ICON costs 100K dollars. The motor was Chevy. The Land cruiser is one of the value established model in any year model among TOYOTA. It is pretty expensive but not as ICON. Next release, will it be finally the clone of 2000GT?

This event has many people come over from Japan and many reporters of magazine were there too.

Now the first prize went to Drag Race style 1969 TOYOTA Carolla, MOONEYES had donated MOON Disc for sub prize and judges happen to chose the car I liked most with my Taste. Deuce Factory, Mr. KASAI has also received prize.

At same location on Saturday September 29th the "Japanese Classic Car Show" will be hosted. I am looking forward to that event.

ジャンクヤード

この写真を手に入れたのは約10年以上前の事だと思う。
2台のクラウン観音ワゴンに1台の観音セダン、それと丸テールと角テールのセダンがそれぞれ1台ずつ、店の前にはパンクしたマークII ワゴン。もっと他にもあるんじゃないかなと想像を掻き立ててくれるジャンクヤード。

頼りは建物の外観に書かれたShop名、市外局番の無い電話番号、それと番地とストリートの名前だけ。

番地があってもCityや郡が分からなければ当時は探しようがないし、電話番号があっても市外局番が無ければ掛けようがない。想像できるのはNorthern Californiaのどこか、それもタダの想像にすぎず、何度かTryしたが結局見つけられずに諦め、何時の間にか深い記憶の奥に眠っていたこのジャンクヤード。

とある時「そうだ、Googleで探してみよう」と思いつき、色々やってみると、何と衛星写真でそれらしい場所を確定する事に大成功。マークＩＩの写真後方に写っていた斜めに駐車する道路や、なにやら学校のような低く大きな建物、そしてジャンクヤードみたいな建物も確定できたが、周りにジャンクのクルマを見る事が出来ない。見えるのは広いヤードだけ、でも確かに写真に写る建物はこのShopに違いない。場所が確定できたからやはり現地を確かめ、物があればラッキーだし、無ければ諦めも付く。

そんな訳でLAから4時間くらい北上し、現地を訪ねることになった。非力なChevy HHRでFWY5の急坂はかなりきつい。1960年代当時の非力な日本車でハイスピードでのこの山越えは大変だったろうと思いつつ、現地についてみるとあった！場所は間違えていなかった！しつこく思っていればいつかはかなう時が来るもんだ！と自分のしつこさに感謝！建物もあり、かなり外観は違うが、でもこの建物に間違いない。



さてクラウンは？一台もない、それよりジャンクヤード自体が無い、やはり衛星写真のとおりか。Shopのオーナーに聞いてみると7年前まではあったが、そのオーナーが他界し、ジャンクは全て何処かへ行ってしまい、その後は現オーナーが修理屋をやり、現在に至るそうである。なんと、あのクラウンは何処へ行ってしまったのか？
でももしまだあった場合どうしたか？あのジャンクを全部を買う事になったとしたら・・・。これ以上、ジャンク クラウンを横浜に集めてどうする？と冷静に考えてみると無くて良かったのかもしれない。でも残念。10年前に来たかった！

These picture were given about 10 years ago. Two TOYOTA Crown "Kannon (Suicide Doors)" Wagon, one Sedan and one each of Round Tail Lenses and Square Tail Lenses Sedan. There was a punctured Mark II Wagon in front of shop and junk yard which probably contained more. The source was the name of shop and street name with number and phone number without an area code. There was no way to find place back than. No city name or province, no area code phone number meant no way to call. All I could imagine was that it was somewhere in Northern California.

But that was just my imagination and even though I tried few things I couldn't find it and eventually I had given up finding and it was left on my memories until I thought about trying to find it using "Google" and found some satellite pictures of the location. Same way the cars are parked on the street behind the Toyota Mark II as on picture, Short but big building which look like school or church and this building at junk yard was able to identify but the junk cars around the building was unable to find, all there was huge yard, but still the building has to be right since I have located place, I have to check the place, I will be lucky if cars are still there and even if there are none left I could give up so drove 4 hours from LA to visit the place.

The taking hike on steep uphill on FWY 5 was hustle for the weak Chevy HHR, Freeway has some steep hills to clime up the mountain and It must have been some hustle to go over the mountain in high speed with weak 1960s Japanese cars.

Finally found the place and it was there, the place was right. Extremely constantly thinking about wishes and eventually wishes come true. I had to thank to my continuous wishes the building is there but it looks they had changed some, but its definitely the same building and how about Crown?

Not even one car, junk yard is gone the satellite picture was right. Asked the shop owner and he told me that old man was there until seven years ago and junk yard was still there with many cars but when he passed away they sold place and junk was taken away, The current owner owns place from then till now and has repair shop. Well where did all that Crown go? But what if all the cars were still there, what would I do with all the Crowns from junk yard move to Yokohama, Japan? What am I going to do with more Junk Crown in Yokohama? When I think about it calmly, it was better to be all gone, even though its sad to see them all gone. I wish I was there back in ten years ago.

先週末のMOONEYES USA

先週末はMOONEYES USA（以降MUI）倉庫の引越しでした。
今度の新しい倉庫はShopの隣なので大変便利ですが、狭くなったので足場を組んで2Fを作りました。木曜日からDeanに手伝ってもらい少しずつ物を移動し金曜日に一気にと思いましたが、金曜日は生憎の雨。気温も低くこの日は倉庫内の整理で終わってしまいました。

Californiaも寒かったり暑かったりで、天候は全世界的に不順なようです。冷たい雨は夕方に上がり、レインボウが東の空にかかったのですがこの日はこれでおしまい。

土曜日、Again！この日も朝から一気に、と行きたいところでしたが、この日はVenturaで"Back to the Beach"というCar Showが開催され、一度も行った事が無かったので午前中だけ行ってきました。Shopから2時間位、Ventura Hightway 101を北上したVentura County FairｇrandでそのShowは開催されています。101をそのまま北上するとあの有名なPaso Roblesにも行けます。今年のPasoは5月27日、日本ではMotorcycle "Show & Swap Meet"（MSS）の開催日ですね。どっちに行きますか？勿論MSSですね！

このEvent、クルマとKustom KultureのEventですが、バイクも沢山参加していますし、Swap Meetでは多くがバイク部品を売っていました。

Southern Californiaで開催されるこの種類のEventはバイクの参加が当り前になり、必ずバイクを見る事ができます。ゆっくりしたかったのですが倉庫の移動もあり、10時過ぎには会場を出てShopに向かいました。

天気も良かったので出来るだけの荷物を移動。中には無くなっては困る物があるので、自分でしっかり移動しておくのが今回の大きな目的だったのは言うまでもありません。このDragsterのフレームやWoodyも、ちゃんと倉庫に保管できます。


夜、友人に誘われてSeal BeachでDinnerを取り、PCH（Pacific Coast HWY）で帰宅途中、30年近く写真を撮ろう、撮ろうと思いつつ、クルマを止めるのが面倒で何度もその前をパスしたポリネシア風レストランを今回は意を決して遂に撮影したのです。無くなる前に撮れて良かったです。

「次に撮ればいいや」と思い結局撮れなかった物も沢山あり、写真に明日はありませんね。撮ろうと思った時以外にチャンスは2度と来ません。今回は珍しくいい決断でした。Huntington Beach周辺が一番変わってしまいました。

日曜日、この日は日本に戻る日でしたがPomonaもあり、Long BeachではBikeのSwap Meetもあり、空港へ行く前にちょっとLong Beachに寄って行こうと思っていました。が、MUIはブースをPomonaに出店しているし、久しくPomonaに行っていなかったので、覗きに行ってきました。

クルマのエリアしか廻れませんでしたが、昔からみる50年代、60年代のクルマは勿論の事、Muscle Carや70年代、80年代の車も多く見かけました。

クルマってたくさん道で見かけているうちは皆、鼻も掛けませんが、一瞬全く姿を見なくなり、次に目に付くようになった時は結構な値段が付いたりしているケースが多いです。「昔はこれ沢山走っていたのに」とか「なんでこのクルマが。。」とか、無くなって来たり、何かのきっかけで廻りが騒ぎ出し、あっという間に値段が高騰してしまうクルマも沢山あります。Pomonaでは日本車も結構ありました。

日本では高くなって手が出せないクルマはトヨタ 2000GT位でしょうか？USAではChrysler系は皆高いし、カマロもマスタングも何でも高かったです。クルマはある程度高い金額で取引されていれば簡単にジャンクになりませんが、 日本のようにどんどん値段が低くなると扱われ方も値段のように低くなっていくので、その様なクルマの行く末は不安が一杯です。と思ったのが今回のPomonaでした。


Pomonaから空港へ向かうFWY605では日本VIP仕様のLexusが前方を走行していました。FWYに似合うとは思えませんが、日本車の人気が高い以上、日本車をカスタムすれば手本は日本ですからこうなっても不思議はありませんね。USAの日本車好きにとってはCoolなのでしょう。こうしてCalifornia 3泊5日は終わり、来週は上海オートショーです。

Last weekend was MOONEYES USA (MUI) warehouse moving. The new warehouse is beside the shop and very convenient but smaller so made 2nd floor. From Thursday Dean MOON Jr. has helped to move things from old warehouse and wished to make all move within Friday but it had to rain. It was cold too so clean up the new warehouse was all we could do

California is also having strange weather with mix of warm and cold days , Looks like weather is unstable world wide. The cold rain has dried up in late afternoon and rainbow has appeared in east sky so this was end for the day.

On Saturday I hoped to finish on from morning but there was an event called "Back to the Beach" at Ventura and I had to go there in morning as I have never been to it.

Two hours on Ventura highway 101 from shop at Ventura County Fairground was where the show was hosted. 101 north leads to famous Paso Robles. This year's Paso is on May 27th, in Japan we host Motorcycle "Show and Swap Meet (MSS)". Which one would you go? Of course MSS, right!

This event is Hot Rods/Kustoms and Kustom Kulture event but many bikes were there too. Swap Meet had mainly bike parts.

Southern California event with this type of event has always bikes in the show. You can always see the bikes. I wish to look around more but had to return to moving so I left the show on 10am went back to the shop. The weather was good so made things move as much as possible.

There were many thing that cannot be lost so I had to move them by myself which was the major reason of this trip. The Dragster frame and Woody are in warehouse too.

At night, friends asked me for dinner in Seal Beach and cruised on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) made stop to take picture of Polynesian restaurant which I wanted to take picture for more than 30 years but didn't stop the car to take picture. I was so please to be able to take picture before it was gone.

Next time and so many things I couldn't take picture as things will not be there, you never know so there are No tomorrow for taking pictures. No chance other than when you thought of taking pictures. It was rare good decision. Huntington Beach has chanted most in PCH.

Sunday, this day was the returning day to Japan but Pomona was on, Long Beach had Bike Swap Meet and wanted to stop by Long Beach before taking flight but as MUI had shop in Pomona I went to Pomona. I went around the area for cars only but from old time the 50s and 60s, Muscle Car and 70s and 80s car were seen too.

Car is not paid too much attention when they are still running on street but Once they are gone, next time to see is usually after the price has gone up. "This car was all over the street" or "Why this car?" but as soon as they are gone and some how it starts up the move and price get rocket high. There were many Japanese car in Pomona too.

How about the Toyota 2000GT which is too high priced in Japan. In USA, Chryslers are all getting high. Camaro and Mustangs were high too. Car will not be junked if the price is kept high and if price fall like in Japan and the care will be less as equal as the price and worries me how it will end. That what I thought of Pomona this time.

On the way from Pomona to LAX on FWY 605, there was Japanese VIP style Lexus driving in far front. I doubt it match with freeway but as Japanese cars are as getting popular, if some one refer to that style as a text it can not be helped. People who like Japanese car in USA may seem cool. That's how 5 day 3 nights in California has end and next week is Shanghai Auto Show 2007.

Reyn Spooner Aloha Shirts

暖かくなってきたなと思ったらまた急に冷え込んできたり、まったく安定しない天気ですが、暖冬によりサクラの開花は確実に早くなっているようです。

季節が良くなって来ると着たくなるのがReyn Spooner(以降R/S)のAloha Shirtsです。普段、休みの日でも20年以上何かしらMOONの服を着ている生活ですが、それ以外に唯一着るのがR/SのShirtsです。ボタンダウンにプルオーバーのシャツがR/Sの特徴、トラッドなスタイルです。


昨年Hawaiiに行った際、Honoluluの工場見学をさせてもらったのですが、沢山の物がMade in Hawaiiで作られていたのには大変感動しました。


70年代後半、日本で空前のR/Sブームが起こり、僕もその渦中にいましたが、初めてR/Sを買ったのは1980年頃、California Newport Beach、Fashion IslandにあったATEASEというShopでした。 その時買ったAloha Shirtsがこれです。今でも1年に1回位は袖を通す大切な一枚です。


その後、気に入った柄があると購入するというスタンスですが、20年以上も経つと沢山溜まってしまいました。持っているシャツは、なにかしらその時気に入って買ったはずですが、常に着るデザインは数枚に限られるのはナゼでしょうか？

ところで昔、洗濯屋さんへクリーニングに出したら、シャツのラベルにペンで名前を書かれてしまったのですが、大事なシャツはラベルも大事なので困りますよね。今出している所は違いますので、地域によって、または洗濯屋さんによって違うのでしょうか。いずれにしても　「ラベルに名前を書かないでよ、頼むから～」と常に思っていました。


余計な事を話しましたが、半袖を着れるのもうすぐですね。暖かい日が待ちどおしいです。

It was warm but suddenly got cold again, unstable weather but surely the cherry blossom is going to be early because of the warm winter.

When weather gets better I want to wear Reyn Spooner (R/S) Aloha Shirts. I have been wearing MOON clothes for more than 20 years on my off days and only clothes I wear other then MOON clothes is R/S shirts. Button down collar and pull over shirts are R/S's style, Traditional style.

Last year we visited their factory in Honolulu when we visited Hawaii, It was very fascinating to see many items are made in Hawaii.

In late 70's, there was big R/S boom in Japan and I was in Japan while that boom was on, but first time I bought R/S was in about 1980, at shop called ATEASE in Fashion Island at Newport Beach, California. This is the Aloha Shirts I bought at that time. It's a very important one as I still wear it at least once a year.

After that I would buy one when ever I see the design I like and after 20 years or so, many shirts are in my wardrobe. The shirts I have are all design that I liked in that time but when it comes to choosing what to wear, why is it I always choose few out of all?

By the way, when shirts were taken to dry cleaning in Japan, the dry cleaning shop wrote my name on shirts tag with a pen, but even the tag is important for important shirts, so it was a big problem for me. The shop I am taking my shirts is different now and will not write on tag, may be it depends on the dry cleaning shop, I guess was old style.

Anyway I was always hoping that no body will write name on the tag. It's almost time to wear the short sleeves. I can hardly wait for warm days.

DVDの感想

"TWO-LANE BLACKTOP"という映画のDVD発売に先駆けて、発売元からサンプルを頂戴したので早速観てみました。1972年にUSAで公開された映画で、主人公の55 ChevyがStreet Raceでお金を稼ぎながらWest CoastからEast Coastへドライブして行くような内容です。日本ではあまり知られてませんが、USAでは70年代前半、常に話題になった映画でした。

映画のレプリカ？そっくりです

DVDの中で特に懐かしかったのは田舎のDrag Race場のシーンです。粗末なスタンドや建物、何も無い所にコースだけあるレース場は他州に行くと結構ありました。多分今でも田舎にあるDrag Race場はDVDに出てくる感じだと思います。南California, San Diego近郊に最後まで残ったOld School Raceway、Carlsbadがこんな感じでした。

中でもレース場に出てくるクルマはカッコ良かったです。特に55とVetteのレースシーン、 最近のレースカーでああいう動きをするクルマが減っちゃいましたが、クルマの動き方も昔なんです。やはりMancie M22 ロッククラッシャー 4スピード トランスミッションでしょうか。実にカッコいい！

昔、僕らもChevy VanでNovaを載せたトレーラーを引き、ArizonaとかWest Coastのレース場を転々と廻る計画を立てた事もありましたが、夢物語で終わってしまいました。Drag Raceが身近にあった、のどかな時代のDVDです。クルマのシーン、最高に見ごたえありますよ！

I watched DVD sample of "TWO-LANE BLACKTOP" the movie which will be released on DVD soon in Japan and supplier has sent me sample. In 1972 the movie was shown in USA and story goes with 55 Chevy whose owner is the main character of story and he makes money on street races on the way to east coast from west coast. It is not famous in Japan but when the movie was released in USA in early 70's it was a real popular movie. Why now in Japan? It's been 35 years.

The cars on the movie were all American cars. It is rare to see so many American cars in the DVD movie. When I was in Southern California in late 70's, it was like this movie on weekends in some town cruising was held and young and Hot Rod filled Boulevard, every weekend we went to Orange, Whittier, Vannuys, Down Town LA and some Street Race was held in some suburb and had lost on Street Race back then.

The scene that reminded me most was the Drag Race field in suburb. Simple stand and building, nothing there but course and there were many of these Raceway existed in other states. Probably still existing Drag Raceway in suburb is one like on this DVD. In Southern California, Carlsbad was like this as it was an Old School Raceway in San Diego suburb, but it was shutted down.

The cars came in the Raceway were cool. Especially the race scene of this 55 vs. Vette, these moves were not scene these days, the move of the cars are old too. It must be a Mancie M22 Rock Crasher 4 speed Transmission. How Cool!

Back then we had planed to go on race hopping in Arizona and Raceway in west coast on Chevy van with Nova pulled by a trailer with Chico, but end up as a dream. The DVD from the time when Drag Race was there in every day life. There are Great car scenes to watch.

In the Navy

In the Navyといっても1979年頃 Village Peopleで流行った歌のタイトルではありません。アメリカ第7艦隊水兵物語 "IN THE NAVY"という本です。 1978年から81年の間、Californiaでの留学生活で沢山の人と出会いました。その中に大変お世話になった沖縄アメリカンスクール出身の秀才4人組がいました。そしてもう一人、彼らの沖縄時代の友人でUS Navyの兵隊さん、アメリカ人の父と日本人の母を持つハーフのジロミ・スミス（日本名は鈴木治呂美）がいました。

当時彼は空母ミッドウェイの乗組員で厚木基地（空母なら横須賀なのにって思った方は本を読んでください）に居たので、僕がCaliforniaから帰国後MOONEYESをOpenする頃まで、良く彼の家を訪ねたのでした。初期のMOONEYES キッズ Tシャツのモデルを務めてくれたのはジロミの娘さんでした。そのジロミが出した本がこの"IN THE NAVY"。

当時、彼は僕にはまったく分からない世界の話をよくしてくれたのですが、今回この本を読んでよーく理解できました。ジロミに一度「飛行機のライセンス取ったから一緒に乗ろう！」と誘われました。ジロミは免許取りたて、僕は飛行機なんかまるで分からないのに、彼の指示で何かをチェックした時の写真です（左がジロミ）。

感想は一言で言えば「二度とセスナに乗りたくない」。セスナは小さいので怖かったけど、「二度と彼の操縦には乗りたくない」のが正直な話、だってパイロットが離陸直前に滑走路で離陸の仕方マニュアルを読んだりしますか？厚木から江ノ島あたりの往復でしたが、本当に怖かった！着陸はもっと怖かった！彼の操縦ぶりも中に書かれていますが、僕としては一緒に乗る前にこの本を読みたかった！

でも本は全部日本語で書かれているし、聞いたことも見た事ない話ばかり、軍隊物小説とはまったく違う、ハチャメチャな話ばかりでこれは面白いです。当時彼から聞いたハチャメチャな話が、よりリアルにもっと深く書かれているし、そして知っている奴が書いているから尚楽しい。日本語が100%のジロミだから、英語を翻訳した無理な表現がなく、身近に話が伝わってくるのです。 彼はもう一冊 "空母ミッドウェイ―アメリカ海軍下士官の航海記"という本も出しています。こっちも面白い！アマゾンで買えますから、興味のある方は是非読んで見てください。

"In the Navy" is not the title of Song which Village People had hit in 1979. It's a title of book which is about Navy in American No. 7 fleet. I have met many people when I went abroad to study in California from 1978 to 1981. There were 4 super smart guys from American school in Okinawa who helped me out during my stay. Then there was Jiromi Smith, their friend since they were in Okinawa. He was half American half Japanese. With father in US Navy and Japanese mother, his Japanese name is Jiromi Suzuki. He was crew of an air Craft Carrier "Midway" based in Atsugi base in Japan (for people who thought air craft carrier was based on Yokosuka in Japan, please read his book) so I used to visit him often in his house when I came back from California till I was opening MOONEYES. After opening MOONEYES, I was busy, not time to visit him. The early day model for MOONEYES KIDS T-shirts was Jiromi's daughter. That Jiromi had released book and it was this "In the Navy". Back then he used to tell me the story of world that I couldn't really understand but when I read this book I got better idea of what he wanted to tell me. Jiromi once asked me for taking ride in air saying "let's take flight I got license for air plane". Jiromi just got license, I didn't know anything about airplane but I was checking something as he told me to and that's when this picture was taken. The comment I can say is "I don't want to get on Cessna again", it was a fear full experience to be on small plane as Cessna but truth is that I didn't want to be on plane which he was handling. That's because I don't think there are any pilot who needs to read the manual to find out how to take off right before take off. It was from Atsugi base to near Enoshima (in same Kanagawa prefecture about 10 miles in straight distance) but I remember it was really a fear full flight. His flight ability is written in book too but I would rather have read this story before I got on his flight. But this book is written in Japanese. The Book has stories that I never heard or seen of. It's totally different from naval story, its fun to read all these crazy stories. The stories I heard from him back then is written in more real and deep details and most of all its fun to read the book somebody I know has written. Since Jiromi speaks fluent Japanese its naturally expressed and not some English translated in to Japanese in expression that we don't use. He has another book out called "An Air Craft Carrier Midway". This one is good to read too. You can buy it from Amazon.com so If you are interested, please try and read one. CKB 剣さんが来店

9日(木) TV東京の取材で、Crazy Ken Band（CKB）の横山 剣さんが良く行くShopとしてMOON Cafeに来店してくれました。この画像はその時、剣さんにブログ掲載許可を頂いた上で撮影させて頂きました。

あれほど売れているのに剣さんは何時も丁寧で、しかも腰が低く、見習わなければいけませんね。超忙しい方なので最近は昔のようにフラーっと来店される事がメッキリ減ってしまいましたが、こうして地元 横浜 本牧を大事にしてくれています。今回の取材では、CKBの練習スタジオでもあり、12月3日(日) YOKOHAMA HOT ROD・Custom Show 2006で演奏予定のThe Mojos リーダー CHIBOさんの経営するBoogie Cafeにも行かれるとのことでした。 剣さん、ご来店ありがとうございました。 ★テレビ東京系列6局ネット：「みゅーじん/音遊人」★ 11月26日(日) 22時54分 ～ 23時24分で放映です

さて、剣さんの良く行くお店でもあり、横浜 本牧を語る上で逃す事が出来ないお店があります。それはIG。11年くらい前まではItalian Gardenと呼ばれた、平屋の雰囲気あるレストランでした。当時隣にはVeniceと言うレストランがあり、その隣にはVFW (Veterans Foreign Warの略）というBar、その昔は兵隊専用でしたが、20年位前からは日本人も利用可能だったので、良く元町の帰りに行ったものです。

どのお店も店内は電灯を絞り、アメリカの薄暗いバー＆レストランの雰囲気で最高でした。昔、六本木にニコラスというピザ専門店もありましたがここも薄暗かったですね。最近は薄暗い怪しげな店は減ってしまいました。MOON Cafeも午後4時以降は店内の蛍光灯を消し、少し暗い感じで営業してるのに気が付いた方いますか？電球とネオンのコンビネーションが雰囲気なんです。 Boogie CafeもMOON CafeもIGも、何処も夜は薄暗いですよ。蛍光灯は使っていません。

さて、Italian Gardenは近隣の開発により立ち退きとなり、今は昔のお店の反対側にIGとして11年前に移転、旧店舗からマネージメントをしていた八木さんがオーナー経営しています。

IGの一押しメニューは四角いピザ、それとスパピザ。ピザの上にスパゲティーが載りチーズが沢山掛かった高カロリーメニューですが、IGではさらに高カロリー希望者にスパゲティーの大盛りも注文できます。美味しいですよ、なんたって以前紹介したホフブロウのスパピザ考案者がIGで腕をふるっているのですから。

営業時間は夜7時頃～朝5時頃まで、あくまでも「頃」ですから注意してください。美味しいお酒とピザを食べながら、八木さんに本牧の話を聞いてみてください。何と言っても彼は本牧の生き字引の様な人ですから。

On Thursday November 9th, 2006, Mr. Ken Yokoyama of Crazy Ken Band(CKB), famous and popular music band in Japan came to MOON Cafe to introduce place he usually goes to in TV Tokyo program. This picture was taken at that time with permission to list on my BLOG. Even though he is a big star, Ken-san is always very nice and polite which I admire the most. He is very busy and not so often visiting us like old days but still has big support to locals in Honmoku, Yokohama where he lives now which is very respective of him. That day The Boogie Cafe, the CKB session studio and The Mojos leader CHIBO-san who will be playing live at YOKOHAMA HOT ROD Custom Show 2006 was also introduced on the same TV Show. I'd like to say "thank you for visiting our shop" to Ken-san. Now the shop which Ken-san often go and is not to be missed when we talk about Honmoku, Yokohama is "IG". About 11 years ago "Italian Garden" was the former "IG" with one story looking building, nice atmosphere. Back then there was "Venice" another restaurant on the side and "VFW(Veterans Foreign War)" on the side, a bar for soldiers back then but Japanese were able to go 20 years ago so we went while we were in Motomachi shop in Yokohama. Motomachi was our first shop but no longer exist. All shops have lights down and dark looking Bar & Restaurant style with good atmosphere. Back then Nicholas Pizza was in Roppongi, Tokyo near American Embassy but this one was dark too. Now days there are less dark store with lots of stuff to look for. Did you know that MOON Cafe also has lights down after 4pm to make it little dark and good looking. Combination of Light balls and Neon makes the mood. Boogie Cafe, MOON Cafe and IG they don't use regular fluorescent lamp and are all little dark in the night. Eleven years ago "Italian Garden" was forced to be moved by local development and at other side of road Mr. Yagi who was "Italian Garden" Manager had opened new IG as owner and management. Recommending menu at IG is Square Pizza and "Spa Pizza" which has spaghetti and cheese on top of Square pizza. For high calorie need you can order extra volume Spaghetti on top. It's delicious as it's cooked by the original "Spa Pizza" originator at "HOF BRAU" which I've introduced on my BLOG before. The open hours are roughly from 7pm to 5am and that is roughly and not always precise which please note. Please try nice drink and Square pizza and ask Mr. Yagi to tell you the story of Honmoku, Yokohama as he is the living all his life. He is the Dictionary of Honmoku, Yokohama.

ワイルドマン石井の出張看板屋さん

前回の出張でWildmanにMOONEYES USA社屋に看板を入れて貰いました。日本からの出張看板屋さんです。 まずは隣のハンバーガー屋「ハングリーボーイ」側、MOONEYES USA Officeの建物に「Speed Shop Retail Store」と入れました。

昔はChampion Spark Plugのロゴが描かれていたのは前回のブログに出ていますが、今回は「Shopがありますよ」って感じで「Retail Store」としました。これでどちらの方向から走って来てもこのサインが目に入るので、建物も目立つように様になりました。

ついでですからハングリーボーイの朝食を3品紹介しましょう。まず、甘党Wildmanが大好きなフレンチトースト w/ベーコン＆エッグです。僕は甘党ではありませんが、USAで食べるフレンチトーストは美味しい。MOON Cafeでも出してほしいな！

次は僕が好きなチョリソ＆エッグ、これはちょっと辛めです。これをトルティアに載せ、サルサをかけて食べるのです。美味しいですよ。ハッシュブランもビーンズも最高です。このチョリソ＆エッグはブレックファスト ブリートでも美味しいです。

そしてもう一品はハム＆エッグ サンドウィッチです。このボリューム見てください。これも僕のお薦めです。MOONEYES USAに来たら隣のハングリーボーイも利用してください。滞在中のある時、ここで皆でランチしていたら何とチェックショップの大塚社長が「シゲさ～ん」って突然現れたのにはビックリしました。

さて、次はMachine Shopにも描いてもらいました。

1992年創業当時、Ed Rothと一緒にWildmanがEd Rothの指示の下、Eyeball ロゴとMOONEYESと入れたのですが、ナゼか歪んで描かれてしまったのでいつか消してしまいました。

今思えばEd Rothが描いたのだから残しておけばよかったのですが、その時はそんな事考えていませんでした。ある時、Ed Rothが壁を見て「ナゼ消したの？」って聞かれた時は返事に困ったな～。

今回の文字はDean MOON創業時に入れていたものを復活、おかげさまでカッコよくなりました。ちょっと文字を入れるだけカッコよくなってしまいますね。Wildmanは2日間この壁を描き、Duallyのドアに会社のロゴを入れ、今回の出張を終えました。御苦労様でした。

On previous business trip to MOONEYES USA, I had Wildman to do signs on shop wall. First from the wall by the next door Hamburger shop "Hungry Boy" and on the MOONEYES USA Office building, new signs of "Speed Shop Retail Store". It used to have logo of "Champion Spark Plug" logo which was on the last blog and this time retail store on sign is for more like shop is here. With this new sign people can see the sign from any direction and building stood out more. As mentioned before let me introduce 3 breakfast of Hungry Boy. First is the Wildman who is into sweets choice, French Toast w/Bacon & Egg. I am not into sweet but French Toast in USA taste good, I wish MOON Cafe can serve this too. Next is my choice Chorizo & Egg, its hot. I have it on tortilla with salsa on. Taste good. Hash brown and beans are excellent too. This Chorizo & Egg taste good with Breakfast Burrito, too. Another one is Ham & Egg Sandwich. Please look at its volume. This too is my recommendation. Please try the next door Hungry Boy when you visit MOONEYES USA. They have beer too! Next sign was on Machine Shop. In 1992 when Re-starting MOON business, Ed Roth and Wildman were working on the sign, with Ed Roth giving direction to Wildman but the Eyeball was wicked and so I wiped some day. Now we think we should left it as Ed Roth drawn it but not a chance back then. I couldn't think of good reason to reply when Ed Roth asked me for a reason of wiping out. This sign resembles Dean MOON's opening signs, it looks good now. It makes look good by just adding little bit of sign. Wildman had 2 days on this wall and sign on Chevy Dually door and finished off this business trip. Thank you for your work.

American Graffities

ロケーションがあまりいい所ではないので心配していましたが、遂にやられてしまいました。

周辺にグラフィティーは多いのですがMOONEYES USA(MUI)は一度も描かれた事が無かったので、描く人も描いて良い場所とかを考えているのかな？と思っていましたが、今までがたまたま運が良かっただけのようです。

東京にあったMOON Equipped Shopは周りが落書きだらけでも無傷だったのですが、MUIは遂にやられてしまいました。

このEyeballサインは40年以上前の古い物で、昔は建物の上にあったのですが、Cityからのセットバックの要請でビルを潰した1992年、今の場所に移設しました。

また、Eyeballの下の"MOON Equip. Co."の文字は現在、横浜 本牧のMOON Garageで使っています。出来る限りDean MOONの残した物をそのままにしたいので大切に使ってきましたが、心無い連中は何処の国にもいるもんです。

これを描いた2人組はPoliceに逮捕されたそうですが、こっちはまた壁を塗らなくてはいけないし、Eyeballは作り直しの必要があるかもしれないし、とまったく頭が痛くなります。当然、弁償なんて期待出来ないでしょうし。

"American Graffities" I have been worried about the location was not so good around MOONEYES USA but finally happened. There are many Graffiti's in this neighbors but MOONEYES USA (MUI) never had Gratifies drawn on, so I thought may be people who draw them think where to draw or not, but it seems that we were just lucky. MOON Equipped shop in Tokyo had no Graffiti's drawn even though there are many Graffiti's in neighbors, but MUI finally got sprayed on. This Eyeball sign is more than 40 years old and it used to be set on top of building for long time but was moved in 1992 with order by city to set back the building. The MOON Equipped Logo which was under this Eyeball is now used in MOON Garage at Honmoku, Yokohama, Japan. I try to maintain what Dean Moon has left and taking good care for things he has left but There are people with no heart in any country. The two people who spray painted were rested by Police but we still have to paint wall and Eyeball may need rebuilding, I couldn't help getting angry. And of course I doubt I can get them to pay for the repair.

20th Anniversary MOONEYES

今日5月17日でMOONEYESは丸20年が経ちました。 Dean MOONに「お前はMOON Of Japanだ」と命名され、1986年5月17日、横浜・元町の元町プラザ2階に、MOON Discと少量のMOONパーツ、USA関連グッズ、それとFord Cobra関連グッズ、古いCan Amや日本グランプリとかのポスターを扱った、ノスタルジアなレーシングシーンを感じる店とし、今とはまったく違う商品ラインアップでスタートしました。MOONEYESの名前は彼のDragsterから頂戴しました。

初めて広告を出した雑誌もカスタムカー誌ではなく、なんとカーマガジンというくらいですから、その違いも想像できると思います。

もちろん狙った年齢層も当時で40歳位の方々、軽免許がまだ取れた時代の層、つまり日本グランプリやCan Am、Indy等、USAレースが紙面を飾り、東京青山にあったRQ（Racing Quarterly）等に思いを馳せ、オートスポーツ誌にはMOONやShelbyロゴのTシャツやステッカーが掲載され、テンガロンハット（Cowboy Hat）が流行った時代の方々を対象、と考えていました。

なつかしいMOON、Cobra＆RQステッカー等を販売 These are Good Old Stickers by MOON, Cobra and RQ that we used to sell.

当時、CobraのポスターやTシャツ、Shelby Teamのシャツとか日本では皆無だったので、開店当初は結構お客様がCobraグッズ目当てで来店して下さいました。世の中Cobraが好きな方は沢山いらっしゃいますね。欧州車好きな方でもCobraだけは好きっていう方は沢山いらっしゃいます。Cobraは特別なんですね。そういう僕も65 GT350ファンです。

また、Cobraの第1号車はMOON（現MOONEYES）でFredとかが手伝って作られたのですから、Cobra関連グッズをMOONEYESで扱う事は、ごく自然の流れだったのです。そんなCobra好きのお客様の一人がなんと今では日本のピンストライパーのパイオニアであり第一人者であるワイルドマン石井だったのです。彼はこの時代に1968 Shelby ＧＴ350をMOONEYESから購入してくれたのです（MOONEYESの輸入車第一号でもあります）。大変いいお客様でした。

MOON Equipment Company（現 MOONEYES, USA）で 製作中のCobra1号車。車に乗るのはFred Larsen。

そんないい感じのレーシング思い出グッズを販売していたMOONEYESの転換期は、その年の夏に富士スピードウェイで開催された、Ｆｌａｔ-4主催のFamily Dayに飛び込みでスワップミートを出店させて頂いた事がきっかけで、現在のスタイルに定着したのです。その後、石井青年はMOONEYESに就職、日本で初めての本格ピンストライパーとなったのです。 そんなこんなで山あり谷あり、そして21年目に突入しました。これからもどうぞ宜しく御願いします。今晩はスタッフの皆とガレージ前で20周年のBBQです。

"20th Anniversary MOONEYES" As of Today May 17th, 20 years went by for MOONEYES. Dean MOON named me "MOON OF Japan" and on May 17th 1986, I started shop with different style compared to our current one where Nostalgia Racing Scene can be felt through MOON Disc, some MOON parts, USA related goods, Ford Cobra related goods, old Can-Am and NIPPON Grand Prix posters, at 2nd floor of Motomachi Plaza building in Motomachi, Yokohama Japan. MOONEYES name was taken from MOON'S Dragster "MOONEYES". The first advertisement in Japan was not on "Custom Car" but on "Car Magazine" which Japanese readers can imagine that shop had more of race scene image than custom cars. The customers over 40 years old were targeted. It is the age group who knows existence of "Light weight Car license" in Japan, read about Japan Grand Prix and US Races like Can-Am, Indy on news paper, was inspired by RQ(Racing Quarterly-Old Speed Shop) in Aoyama Tokyo Japan, experienced time when Auto Sports magazine had MOON, Shelby Logo T-shirts and Sticker were listed and Cow boy hat with MOON Patch was very popular in the fashion scene in Japan. Back then, posters and T-shirts of Cobra and Shelby Team were not available in Japan so in opening days there were many customers Who came to look for Cobra goods. There are many people who like Cobra and even for people who like European cars, Cobra was an only exception. Cobra is special. I am also fun of '65 GT350. The 1st Cobra was made with help of Fred Larsen and assembled in garage of MOON(current MOONEYES) Santa Fe Spring, Ca, so it was natural to sell Cobra related goods at MOONEYES. The Wildman Ishii was one of our customer who loves Cobra and became Japans pioneer and the first Pinstriper. He has purchased 1968 Shelby GT350 from MOONEYES at that time, which was also the 1st car MOONEYES imported to Japan and he was a very good customer. The change of MOONEYES came as inspired to be in our current style after suddenly dropping by to entry for Swap meet in "Family-Day" at FUJI SPEEDWAY in Japan, Which was hosted by "Flat-4". After that Young man Mr. Ishii has joined MOONEYES and became the first Pinstriper in Japan. Like this and that, so we are in our 21st year of business. Please look forward to our future and wish all the best to every one who has supported us. Tonight we will have 20th Anniversary BBQ with our stuff in front of Garage in MOONEYES Area-1, Yokohama, Japan.

22年前のグアムで

また古い写真で恐縮ですが、22年前グアムであったカーショーの模様をお届けします。 写真を見て改めて驚いたのは、グアムには当時結構しっかりしたUSA車が多かったんだという事です。

このシェルビー GT350はバリバリですね。 オレゴンプレートですからグアムに居る兵隊さんが持ち込んだのかも知れません。大変いい状態です。

	こちらはトンネルラムインテークのDrag Race使用のベガ、
	そしてグッドコンディションの56 シェビー、
	VWも居ますし、

	Islandですから勿論ミニトラックは必需品ですね。
	そして極めつけに何とLow Riderも参加してきました。これにはビックリしました。まさかグアムにLow Riderが走っているとは思いませんでした。

短い旅行期間中に偶然あったカーショーでしたが、色々な車があって楽しい時間でした。 でもIslandというと、この写真のように海風を感じる雰囲気が心温まりますね。

何とMOON Disc装着のZもありましたよ。 これから隔週で「Live from MOONEYES USA, California」、MOONEYES USAでは何が起きているか、また、CaliforniaのFreshな情報をMOONEYES USAのMakoto君が皆さんにお知らせします。今回のMMMから開始です。 楽しみにしてください。

"In Guam 22 years ago" Once again, it's an old pictures from 22 years ago, This issue is about car show held in Guam back then. Looking at these pictures again now I have realized how solid American cars were around in Guam then. This Shelby GT350 is great. Oregon plate means someone from Oregon brought it along to Guam base. That I'm guessing, its in real good condition. This Vega had drag race(Pro Street) set up with Tunnel Ram intakemaniforld look cool. The 56 Chevy was in good condition, VWs were there too and life in an Islands need Mini Trucks. Then Low Riders were there too. This was a real surprise as I never imagined Low Riders were cruising in Guam in 1984. Even though it was a short trip, I had good time at car show I found in coincident. But real Island scene is like this picture where you can feel the winds from the sea and heart warming. There was Datsun Z with MOON Discs too. 南方諸島ヒーロー

寒い日が続きますが皆さんお元気ですか？ あまりにも寒いので今回は南方諸島の写真を見ながら少しは暖かい感じになりましょう。
	グアムの強烈な日差しの中、涼しそうな木陰にひっそりたたずむ1964 Impala 4ドアセダンです。ボンネット等、かなりな状態ですが全体の雰囲気はまだまだ行けそうな感じです。長いこと動いている感じはしませんでした。この写真はGibsonsの反対側で撮りました。

ガレージにいるのは1955 Chevy 2dr 210です。グアム島を走っていたら道路脇にいきなり55を発見、そーっと写真を撮らせてもらいました。この55、何とフロントはストレートアクセルなんです。ドラッグレースでもやっていたのでしょうか？昔、グアムの米軍アンダーソン飛行場でドラッグレースをやっていたって聞いた事あります。今だったらストレートアクセルのギャッシャースタイルは、カリフォルニアではその道の通のスタイルです。それがグアムにあるとは・・・。カッコいいですね！

今度はサイパン島、せっかくの南国旅行なのに曇り空、ちょっとがっかり。やる事もないのでまた車探しにサイパン島を当てもなく走っていたら何と1969 Camaroとセリカ2台、パームツリーに見守られ余生を送っていました。この3台の状態は強烈すぎます。車って放置しておくとこんなになってしまうのでしょうか？今頃は土に帰ってしまったのでしょう。Camaroもセリカも勿体ない！まったく勿体ない。

でもどこかで古いUSA車や日本車に出会うとほっとしますね。少しは暖かくなりましたか？ ところで今週末は千葉幕張でオートサロンです。MOONEYESもProboxを展示予定です。寒いですが良かったらお出かけください。

"Southern Islands Hero" Cold days are continuing in Japan and how are all readers doing? Its too cold these days so, this issue is about Southern islands picture to get warm up. In strong sunshine of Guam, cooling below the trees is 64 Impala Sedan. Hood has been rusted out, it seems has not been running for while but still car may regain its life. This picture is taken at opposite side of Gibsons, Super Market. 1955 Chevy 2 dr 210 is in Garage. I was driving around Guam and found this 55 on side of street and walked on by to take picture. This 55's front end had Straight Axel. May be was drag racing. Back in days, heard that Guam US Anderson Air fields had drag strip... Now Straight Axel Gasser style is hot style of those old school drag racing style in California. to see that in Guam? that's cool. But it was about 20 some years ago. Next is Saipan island. The cloud is not good for visiting southern islands. Had nothing better to do than looking for cars on street and found 1969 Camaro and 2 Toyota Celicas under palm tree for rest of life. These three cars are outrageous. Cars get like this when you leave them alone? May be they are blended back to earth. Too bad to see them, Camaro and Celicas. too Bad. But its always relaxing to see Old USA and Japanese cars. Got warm? By the way next weekends is famous Auto Salon in Chiba Makuhari Japan. MOONEYES will be there with few cars. 1970年代、Californiaで見かけた日本車

さて、前回のCaliforniaの日本車特集に続き今回も70年代、Californiaで見かけた日本車を紹介します。

まず5マイルバンパーの付いたTOYOTAカローラはSanta Anaの道端で撮影しました。リアになんとFatなタイヤ、Deepなホイルを履いてますがフロントがノーマルスチール ホイルではちょっとがっかりです。しかしこのカローラ、何とトラクションバーを装着していました。エンジンは分りませんが多分ノーマルですよね。

Shop内にいるのはセリカです。前回紹介のイベント特集でも沢山参加していましたが70年代後半、Gardena辺りのYoung Japanese Americanにセリカの人気は高かったようです。13"リブレホイルを履き、小さなリアスポイラーが何ともUSA的、車高は適度に低く、ビタローニミラーは当時の典型的な日系仕様車です。13"ホイルにハイトのあるタイヤは今見ると何とも新鮮です。こんなセリカ日本にいませんね。

そしてこれからの3台はDrag Race仕様の日本車です。

まずマツダRX3、日本名サバンナ、RX3なんて呼び方なんともいいですね。特別なクルマって感じですが、日本では当時サバンナは暴走カーと言う印象があったのであまり好きではありませんでしたがこのクルマをPomonaで見つけ驚いてしまいました。エンジンはロータリーをチューンした物と思います。フロントはアップさせてDrag Stripを疾走していました。

こちらもPomonaでみたDatsun Zです。多分V-8が入ってるのでしょう。Air Scoopの形が時代を感じますが迫力です。Zはこの年代が好きです。

次はオレンジ カウンティ インターナショナル レースウェイ（OCIR)で見たDodge コルト、こちらもV-8入りだと思います。日本車は小さく、軽いので大排気量エンジンを入れたらきっと早い事は間違いないと思いますが、ホイルべースは短くトレッドも狭いクルマを何百馬力のエンジンで走るのはおっかないでしょうね。古くは欧州車のアングリア、ヒレーとかVWバグにV-8を積んだクルマもいましたが、70年代からは日本車のレースカーも多くなってきました。 RX3、Z & Colt、3台共リアタイヤがちゃんとフェンダーに収まっていてクルマが綺麗。さすがUSA、と思ったものです。

同じ時期、日本では太いタイヤを履くとレースカーでもこういう状態でした（Photo:A）。

当時、三菱車はDodge, Plymouthで販売されていましたが、何か日本車に見えなかったです。

Continuing from last issue of Japanese cars in California, This issue I focus on Japanese cars I have seen in California in late 70s'. First this TOYOTA COROLLA with 5 miles bumper is pictured on street in Santa Ana California. It had really fat rear tires with deep dish wheels and original steel wheels on front was depressing. But it had traction bars on rear. Don't know about the motor but probably stock. In the shop is the TOYOTA CELICA. There was a lot of Celica entry in shows I have mentioned in last issue, In late 70s' Celica used to be so popular to Young Japanese Americans in Gardena area. With 13 inch LIBRE WHEELS and small rear spoiler is so USA style compare to Japanese Celica. Slightly lowered height and Vitaloni Mirrors were popular Japanese American style. Its fresh to see the tall tires on 13 inch wheels now. This kind of Celica is not seen in Japan. Third one is the Drag Race style Japanese car. Its Mazda RX3. Its Japanese name is Savanna, Name RX3 sound good. Sounds special car but back than it used to be Wild Speed Car in Japan and I couldn't like it than until I saw this car in Pomona. I think Motor is tuned Rotary engine. It was racing on Drag Strip with Front end raised up. This is NISSAN/DATSUN Z also seen in Pomona. Probably V8 on this one, Air Scoop tells its age but its impressive. I prefer these years Z. Next is DODGE COLT I saw in Orange County Raceway (OCIR). Think its V8 powered too. Japanese Cars are small and light so it must be fast if powered with big size V8 but with short wheel base and narrow tread, It must been scarily to drive with powerful couple hundred horse powered engine. Before than European ANGLIA, HEALEY and VW BUGS had V8 powered cars but from 70s number of Japanese race cars increased. RX3, Z & Colt had all rear tires fit in fenders and clean which I admire about USA. In same time cars with fat tires in Japan was like these(Photo:A). Back than MITSUBISHI was sold by Dodge, Plymouth dealers and it didn’t look like a Japanese cars.

1977年のCalifornia Beach City周辺でのスナップ写真

適度なLowered、タイヤとホイルだけなのに、ナゼこんなに格好良くなってしまうのでしょうか？ クラウン110 4ドアセダン、110は1979～81年くらいまでなので最近では殆ど目にしなくなりました。この年式あたりになると街乗りも問題なく、Daily Driverとしては何の不自由もなく乗り廻せますので、ちょっと違ったクルマを探している人にはチャンスです。

ホイルはクレーガーSS、昔は日本ではトピーが扱っていたので国産車にもジャストフィットのオフセットがありましたが、今ではUSA物を使う為、フロントがリアより少し出気味になるので、リアに少し太めのタイヤを入れるか何かしたらいい感じになると思います。このクルマには185-70-14 Cooper Cobra GT ホワイト レター ラジアル タイヤを使っています。
古いクルマはメッキがしっかりしているとますます引き締まりますので、メッキはしっかり磨いて下さい。このクルマのポイントは綺麗なメッキにもありますが一番のアクセントはボデイー横に入った2本のピンストライプです。ピンストライプと言うと皆さんデザイン物を想像しがちですが、これが本来のピンストライプの活用法です。しかもこれは市販されているテープですから自分で貼って出来上がりです。これだけで自分のクルマになるのですからカスタムは楽しいですね。 でも同じように作っても、絶対同じにならないのがカスタムですね。 CROWN-CLASSICS.COM

"Cool looking Toyota Crown 110" Why does it look so cool by just doing extreme lowering with tire and wheels. Toyota Crown 110, 4 door sedan was up to 1979 to 1981 which nowadays we hardly see in Japan. Cars in these years can be driven dairy in town and its good choice for someone who want to have different look. Wheels are Cragar SS, they used to have offset that fit Japanese car too while Toppy was selling them but nowadays when using USA product, rear is narrower than the front so its better to have wide tire on rear to have cool look. This car is using 185-70-14 Cooper Cobra GT raised white letter radials all around. Old car looks good with nice chrome so please shine that chrome. This car has nice chromes but also has another accent such as 2 pinstripes on the side. Pinstripe sounds like design for many people but this is the original way to use pinstripe. And this pinstripe is done by tape that sold in shops. Even that can be custom so custom is fun. But even if you try to make it same way it never can be same, That's Custom. CROWN-CLASSICS.COM

1977年のCalifornia Beach City周辺でのスナップ写真

1) この写真の何処がPCH（Pacific Coast Highway)かって言うと「2本煙突があるでしょ」としか説明付きませんが、PCHを疾走するDatsun 620をハンティングトン ビーチ周辺を散歩中にスナップしました。赤い大きなクルマは1969年インパラですか？雰囲気ありますね。この感じに憧れて日本でも何となく走っているUSA車がいますが日本ではクルマを取り巻く環境が違いすぎてこの雰囲気はでませんね。

2) UC IrvineのParkingに駐車中のDusterを撮影したのですが、今見ると周りのクルマも興味ありますね。 水色はFord Merveric、右はChevrolet Nova。Newport Beachに近いIrvineの学生はSurferなのでしょうか？今では周りは住宅で一杯になってしまいました。このDusterの後姿、今みてもカッコイイですね。クルマは後姿です。

	3) Costa MesaのPepboysのParkingです。勿論被写体はPinto、El Caminoと並んだエアクリーナーがボンネットから飛び出した1969 Chevelle。Pepboysは分かり易く言えば量販店なのですが、何から何までほしい物だらけ。日本では当時手に入らない部品が目の前に、それも大量にあるのを見て思わず財布を握り締めたのでした。当時日本ではエアーショックを使ってHip UpするのがHot Rodの象徴でしたが、ここでは荷物を積みすぎてもリアが下がりすぎないようにするショックとして売っていてビックリしました。
それぞれ目的の被写体は一台ですが今見ると周りのクルマや雰囲気から当時の空気を感じることが出来ますね。カメラはリコー オートハーフ、36枚撮りが72枚になるというカメラでした。

"Photos from 1977 in around California Beach City." 1) This picture is on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). You can spot the 2 chimneys is the only explanation I can give but on PCH Datsun 620 was cruising on about Huntington Beach while I was walking. The red big car is 1969 Impala? Brings out that atmosphere. This kind of atmosphere is desired by some in Japan and sometimes USA cars can be found cruising in Japan. 2) Took picture of Duster in parking lot of UC Irvine but now other cars are fun to see too in the picture. Aqua color car is Ford Merveric, on the right is Chevrolet Nova. May be student at Irvine is surfer as Newport Beach is near by. Nowadays its surrounded by houses. This Dusters rear view is still cool to look at. Car appeals on rear view. 3) Pepboys parking lot in Costa Mesa. Focus is at Pinto, El Camino and 1969 Chevelle with raised air cleaner. Pepboys is outlet but made me want to buy everything back them. They had parts that was not available in Japan at that time and so many of them. I recall graving my wallet. Back than air shock was used to raise rear (Hip UP) in Japan and it was surprise to see that they were selling as holding extra weight on the rear. Each picture has main focus on one car but now it shows more of the atmosphere of that time. Camera was Ricoh Auto Half, 36 picture film can be used to take 72 pictures.
